Arrow Atlanta - which lane?

Someone we met at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park two years ago told us that if going through Atlanta we should stay in one lane the entire way. Does anyone know which lane this is? Heading through this coming Saturday. Thank you.

If there are 2 or more of you in the TV then he probably means the HOV lane. It is well marked and a good way to go through Atlanta.

Donít use the HOV lane while towing. Youíll create a heck of a jam behind you and guaranteed to be cutoff with angry drivers passing you.

Use the 2nd lane from the right please.

My friend was towing his 25' FC in HOV lane and motorcycle cop waved him out of HOV.

Which highway?

Which way are you heading? I-85 through Atlanta is no fun with (and probably without) a trailer. Typical old interstate highway that winds through or near the downtown area. Next trip through Atlanta on our way to VA we plan to try I-20 through Augusta to Florence, then I-95 to Richmond.

The OP says they are coming through the Downtown Connector this Saturday.

Iím pretty sure that no road construction inside the Perimeter is going on right now. The trip through should be pretty easy on this weekend day.

We did it a couple of weeks ago, 2nd lane from right is correct. Just watch the signs.

Atlanta proved that you cannot build your way out of congestion.
I-285 is often 10 lanes wide and a parking lot. No wrecks or cops, just massive amounts of cars and trucks. It's difficult to pick a lane because various roads exit left and right and traffic won't want to let you move over.
If I can I stay on I-75 and go right through downtown. Best time is late at night.

Assuming youíre coming from Ohio and down I-75, be careful at the 75/285 ramp where the Braves stadium is, it is opposite of what you would think; meaning the left lane will go west/south and right lane goes east and to the top end. Then stay 2nd lane from right. That side is better than the east side right now. Safe travels.

Stay right and follow the signs. 75 & 85 south will merge & turn into 75/85 (the connector) thru downtown and then split back to 75 & 85 after getting thru downtown. If your vehicle has updated navigation, use it, or use google maps on your phone. Either should safely guide you through.

Reading this thread reminds me of the Abott and Costello "Whose on First" skit. Having driven through Atlanta since 1974, and with a trailer more recently I totally get it....just gave me a chuckle.

I was thinking the same thing & I live here. Normally I just put my destination in Waze and follow it. LOL

HOV lanes typically do not allow trailers, motor homes, and semi trucks. In DC, hefty fines are given for driving in the HOV lanes. Change your setting in GPS to say "No tolls." Best of all, take a route that avoids Atlanta.

I live inside the Perimeter in Brookhaven. Traffic has been much lighter since Covid, but it is building back up. If you drive through between about 10am and 2pm, things are usually not too bad. As there will always be tailgaters and sudden lane changers, I would keep some distance between me and the car ahead as things can slow suddenly especially while on the Connector. I would not want to drive at night. It's too dark and there's too much glare. That's also when the inebriates are behind the wheel. Overall, it's not nearly as bad as Chicago, Dallas, or LA. I would drive straight through and not get on 285.

I have been using the POV lanes since their creation twice a year for the last 20 years at least. It is the best way to go through Atlanta and Saturday or Sunday. And yes you have to be moving at 70 mph to keep up in spite of the 55 mph speed limit.
No problem for me since I normally cruise at 72 anyway.

Avoid Rush Hour

Same as others have said - all cities of 5 million population can be challenging. and pray for no accidents. Truckers are usually good indicators of best lane. Apple Maps provides a good view of problems on Atlantaís many freeways

Reminds me of Airplane:

Male PA Announcer: The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in a red zone.
Female PA Announcer: The white zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in a red zone.

Female PA Announcer: No, the white zone is for loading. Now, there is no stopping in a RED zone.
Male PA Announcer: The red zone has always been for loading.
Female PA Announcer: Don't you tell me which zone is for loading, and which zone is for unloading.
Male PA Announcer: Look Betty, don't start up with your white zone stuff again. There's just no stopping in a white zone.
