AS hit parked semi/container trailer on side of the highway

Anyone else see this post on Facebook? (which, I know, some folks don't believe in following for some reason?) Anyway, drives home the reality we all see when on the highway and a semi or anyone actually, is pulled over on the right side...slow down and change lanes if possible...thankfully, no one seriously injured in this one. Understand it happened on I-77 North, north of exit 57 in SC. Be careful out there...

My wife saw that post this morning as well. We travel that part of I-77 in SC on the way to visit my Mom. It is not a high traffic area and not an area known for high wind so I’m curious how this happened and glad no one got hurt.

Hard to tell from the photos, but it does look like the TV clipped the semi as well.

Surprisingly it's not that uncommon for people to hit vehicles parked on the shoulder.

Appears to be a 27 foot International FBQ- Separation

Looks like the FBQ 27 foot storage compartment held.

The rest of the trailer is missing... but the Front Storage Compartment Held as I see no indents or popped rivets.

An Airstream is WIDER than the Tow Vehicle. Always keep that in mind.

South of Grand Junction, Colorado roll over.

Be careful. Even SOB's explode when rolled over.

Totally yes, I know how not to hit a parked semi on the side of the road. And when it becomes questionable to me I will stop towing and let my kids enjoy..... I drive 45,000 miles a year for work....I know when to stop. So I will keep my frig a running and keeping stuff cold. I have a boat as well as the trailer and am very aware of watching when I need to stop trailering and boating....as much as it makes me aware of my age and sad.

So I am starting to let my son learn....as much as it breaks my heart to not be at the helm. But he wants to know so now is the time to teach so hopefully he takes me along when I am done.

That’s the truth. I patrolled I-5 for only four years and got sideswiped once while stopped on the shoulder, tagging an abandoned vehicle (in broad daylight). Marked car, it didn’t matter…

Glad no one was hurt. I’ve heard the rumble strips a time or two. My wife asked me right away, “are you ok?” So now, when I hit them, I immediately say, I’m ok!
Seems like there’s more people just walking along the roadsides nowadays.

My wife asks same question from time to time...I tell her "no, I'm not ok"! But you can help by going back to your crossword and stop backseat driving! (that's
what I am thinking of course...In reality, I say "yes dear, thanks for asking."

Hazard on Shoulder

Texas has a 'move over or slow down' law for law enforcement, emergency and construction vehicles as well as their personnel. Not sure what the law is in other states but we try and move to the other lane regardless for anything that's stopped on the shoulder.
Coming back from the lake yesterday with a boat in tow, we watched a guy take a bit of a tumble from the stopped cab of a large truck and stumble just inside the roadway. That coulda been bad if someone--including us--was towing a wide vehicle. Long story short, just move over then move back.

In some states changing lanes it IS THE LAW!
I got cut off once by a semi because of a vehicle stopped on the shoulder. Alot of states are making it a law!!
As a conscientious, aware professional driver, I move a lane away from ALL! stopped vehicles on the side of the road. (safely!!!). I believe they have called it courtesy!!! Rick!

We have a requirement to pull over OR slow down for emergency vehicles on the shoulder. No requirement for moving over for other vehicles on the shoulder though.

When I went through CDL training we were taught to always get over if there is a vehicle on the shoulder - not just to avoid hitting it, but to avoid hitting anyone that might exit on the driver's side without looking.

I make it a habit to get over whenever possible. If not possible, then slow down.

Not sure what it is about vehicles parked on the shoulder though, as they seem to pull drivers towards them like they have some magnetic power. Must be some type of psychological phenomenon.

Same here, move left or slow down. I've actually moved left only to have some jackass move right and pass between my vehicle and the emergency vehicle.

We had a tire blow out and the Airstream was on the side of the road on I-70, 40 miles east of Denver. My son was attempting to remove some metal from the wheel well so we could limp into the closest town. I called AAA--nope. I called for police to sit behind us--well, two hours later they showed up. My son told me to go into a field away from the Interstate and take the two dogs with me. I did what he asked. After standing there a while, I realized he sent us away from the vehicle in case it got hit while on the side of the road. I walked back over with the two dogs and my son asked what I was doing. I told him, "It's all or nothing, Baby! Either we all get out of this alive, or we all check out together. " Gratefully we all made it out alive.

Me too! Truckers in the fast lane always slow and allow me over when a vehicle is on the shoulder. I only drive 65. If they see I can't pull left, they usually crowd the left shoulder so I can crowd the center line.
I learned from their ways. It makes total sense.

Interstate Shoulder Parking

This is probably the most dangerous anyone can do while traveling. I drive 120,000+ miles every year and this is the cause of more than half of the accidents I see. One would think being off of a driving lane to be reasonably safe but it’s NOT! People are distracted a lot! Also in heavier traffic vehicles tend not to move over and follow too close. When following too close, especially behind a big truck, you will not see anything stopped on the shoulder. In the last six or seven years I’ve had to stop I think three times on a shoulder. An anti-freeze dump where I found an extra wide spot, my tarp slid back and air got under it to work like a parachute, a heavy tie-down strap was coming loose and potentially get wrapped around the tires and possibly pull part of the load off. What I am saying is, it has to be something serious to stop on an Interstate shoulder. A flat on a travel trailer? I would sacrifice the rim to NOT stop on a busy Interstate shoulder!

This is another reason to avoid interstate highways if your schedule allows you to do so.

In NJ you are required to move over or IF you can't move over slow down to 35 mph or less for emergency vehicles. Note if you can move over just slowing down is illegal.
