Stanley, Idaho. Sawtooth and Cloud Mountain Ranges. Stanley is usually one of the coldest places reporting temps in the US in winter. It is a tiny town, small population, old weathered buildings--really still used, Alaska-like; such a contrast to crowded glamorous trendy Ketchum down the way. We have a great booklet put out by Idaho tourism: Taking the Scenic Route, A Guide to Idaho's Scenic Byways. We could spend many summers in Idaho and not see all the beautiful and interesting places. Good tour reference books from our library, though dated now: Idaho, by John Gottberb, published by Compass American Guides and Foghorn's Outdoors' Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho camping.

I would love to see pictures of some of these places (if anyone has any to post) and know why these are places to see. For example, what are the sand dunes of Nebraska?

I may have missed it here, but has anyone traveled the Lincoln Highway end to end? I read an article some time back about a couple of fellows who traveled it with their 56 and 57 Chev's and thought it may be an interesting alternative to Route 66 one way with the Cloud in tow.

Thanks,
Barry

The article on the Lincoln Highway is featured in a 1999 GREAT DRIVES magazine. To quote "The Lincoln Highway has claimed a hold on our collective imagination here at Automobile Magazine ever since we traced its route on a ten-car drive nine years ago. Conceived half a century before the birth of the Interstate highway system, at a time when most roads ended at the city limits and railroads were the only viable means of overland long-distance travel, the construction the Lincoln Highway was a seminal event in the history of the automobile." "They planned a 3,389-mile route from New York to San Francisco, and called it the Lincoln Highway. An estimated 150 vehicles traveled the length of the highway in 1913 and by 1924, more than 20,000 had made the trip"

Like Rte 66 there's even a society who promote this route

Lincoln Highway Association

I'm thinking it would be an interesting trip for us to head East, then work our way around to the start of Rte. 66 and work our way back West. The trip down and back up the coast to home would just be the icing on the cake.

Yes...all is good...there is a time limit on my list...but I don't have any idea when it is.
Maybe only 30 or 40 years to go, and I want to see some twice.

How could you possibly miss........

Pike's Peak......after all, it was from here that the composer gained the inspiration to write "America, The Beautiful."
