I must be crazy but wife and I interested in spending a few days in Albuquerque during the balloon fest. Thought about camping outside Albuquerque, unhooking and driving TV in for morning launches. To those of you who have attended in the past, is this a good idea? If so, any recommendations where we might stay? At this late date I'm sure most close-in camp grounds will be full so I'm expecting to have to stay out a ways. Our travels will be bringing us in from the north. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Of course it's a good idea. Better to be on-site, but it's one of the most photogenic events I've ever been to. Can't recommend a camp site, but others will chime in.
Also, if you get a chance go to the evening glow I think it is called. Went in 2012 and there were 270 balloons tethered to the ground. All kinds, shapes and sizes. It will be cold, but once they start filling all those balloons it feels nice. Pretty spectacular. Fireworks after, we did not stay for.
Campgrounds do get filled and if you do come in with your TV leave as early as you can as the roads leading to the event are very jammed - about 850,000 folks are expected to attend during the week of the event -'in fact it's best to find the park and ride points and come in to the event via bus

Thanks to all for your suggestions. We were able to get reservations in the dry camping area. We wish we could have gotten in with the other Airstreamers; maybe next year! Looking forward to the experience. Hope to see you there!
