Alaska Highway Fuel Prices

Since we just got home from visit to the southwest I thought I would post some fuel prices we paid or saw in Western Canada and Alaska Highway. I know oil is going up, but I thought this might be helpful for planning purposes to anyone planning on visiting Alaska this summer.

Also I might mention that with the favorable exchange rate if you intend to use cash come with Canadian dollars or get from an ATM in Canada. Don't rely on local businesses to give to current rate. One remote business owner expressed to us that this an issue every summer as American tourists paying cash expect the current exchange rate and some even are offended when change is in Canadian currency.

Anyway hope I attached the .pdf of the fuel spreadsheet correctly!

I should add that the listed price for fuel at Watson lake is pretty good. Based on past years' trips this is pretty unusual it has always been higher than Contact Creek which is where I normally get fuel.

Between $4 and $5/gal. What were the prices like a year ago before the big price drop this last 6 months?

I can look it up and post tomorrow. However you need to remember that the current exchange is very favorable for US visitors, something like $.80 US per Canadian dollar. So fuel at $4 Canadian is around $3.20 US. Seems like last year it was much closer to being even, less than 5% difference. But that is from memory.

Ok, looked up the trip last year coming home. All in Canadian dollars per liter of diesel. Not as may data points as these are only places we refueled and different route home. Remember last year exchange rate was also less favorable to US dollars.

Hope, BC $1.35/L
Prince George, BC $1.45/L
Fort St. John, BC $1.51/L
Contact Creek, YT $1.45/L

Thank you, C
Will be driving to Anchorage in August, then look around the Kenai before heading back to Skagway and taking the ferry to Prince Rupert, and driving back from there via Jasoer and Banff. This makes me think I might unhook Daisy and just sleep in the truck. But thanks again. jon

I towed to Alaska in 2013. At that time diesel was $5.40 - $6.00 a gallon Canadian. The exchange rate at that time wasn't very favorable. Contact Creek was considerably cheaper than Watson Lake then.

Canadian gallons don't enter into it. Fuel in Canada is sold by the liter and all price conversions I did were liters to US gallons.

Any possibility that you could estimate the total number of gallons/liters that you used and number of miles traveled? Looking to get a rough estimate of money needed to plan to spend. Thanks
