Alabama Trip from FL

Planning a trip from our Saint Augustine, FL to somewhere near Mobile, AL for the Thanksgiving Holidays. Would prefer a park a bit east of Mobile within easy driving distance for day trips into the city and the surroundings. Don't know much about the area. Any park suggestions suitable for a 4-5 night stay would be appreciated. We like parks with decent amenities in reasonably quiet surroundings.

Thanks
Ed

Gulf state park in Gulf shores, al. Puts you about an hour drive from mobile. For fun you could ride the ferry from Fort Morgan to dolphin island/mobile. The state park has about everything you would expect at a resort area minus a cable hook up. Gulf Shores offers good food and a decent nightlife.

We enjoyed Gulf Breeze RV Park in Gulf Shores. It is a small park on the bay side. You have beautiful sunsets and not as much salt spray. Be sure to visit Fairhope. It is probably an hour and a half to Mobile.

I second that recommendation. Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort is right off US90, and you can't beat it for convenient access to Mobile. Lots of great restaurants between Meaher and the USS Alabama museum, too.

Maeher is the clear choice if you want to be near the city. In the unlikely event it is full, Blakley State Park (site of last major civil war battle) up highway 225 in Spanish Fort is second closest. Gulf state park is nice but it will be about hour to hour fifteen minutes each way to city.
In Mobile, consider a duck boat tour, visiting battleship Alabama, the Gulfquest maritime museum, Mardi Gras museum, the Oakleigh plantation house, and Bellingraph Gardens in Theodore. Five Rivers across from the park is a must see to appreciate the Delta and try to catch a delta boat tour if possible. There are several good seafood restaurants on the causeway near the park (I like R&R best for casual seafood). Dauphins downtown is on the 34th floor of the Trustmark building had amazing views of port and downtown and half price drinks from 4-6. There are many better fine dining restaurants downtown (Dumbwaiter, Noble South, and Chucks among the best) but none have the view. Consider callaghans at night in the Oakleigh neighborhood for intimate live music.

Just stayed at Meaher 2 nights ago (also traveling from St. A). Right on the water, Mobile skyline in view, beautiful sunsets, but be aware you can also see (and hear) I-10. Also the fishing pier and beach are still closed due to hurricane damage.

Meaher is the way to go. Most of the entire campground covered in huge pines. On the water. You can see the interstate bridge over the bay, but it is about half mile away and you don't hear it. Wonderful city of Fairhope 15 minutes away. Great restaurants on the causeway minutes away. (try Felix' Fish Camp, and the flaming oysters at the Bluegill). 10 minutes from downtown Mobile, which is going through some pretty significant revitalization.

We stayed in Sugar Sands RV park earlier this year. It is new, they allowed our 1981 Airstream, and it was the cleanest RV park we have ever stayed at. We joked that the restrooms and laundry were cleaner than our home! They pick up trash daily, etc. I highly recommend them. http://sugarsandsrvresort.com/ The website doesn't do it justice really.

Meaher is a nice stop. Sites are fairly well spaced out. The trail leading to the pier was full of dozens of swamp bunnies. Shame to hear the pier is damaged because there was a nice walkway thru the swamp/bay. Felix's Fish Camp is another good seafood restaurant. Just make sure they seat you where you can view the bay. We also like to go downtown to Bienville Square and feed the squirrels. They'll eat from your hand and there's a snack shop half block away that roasts peanuts. There are some homeless people that hang out there but we've never been bothered.
