Airstreams in Retirement

There are now 4 vintage Airstreams in retirement at Seaside, Florida. They have all been converted to restaurant duty. They plan to add 2 more before the summer season begins. These pictures were taken this morning.

This ought to generate some discussion. Personally I'm happy to see any old AS put to use versus being put to pasture. Kudos for whoever thought of the idea.

I just saw the first one, the juice bar at crazyguyonabike.com: Bicycle Touring: A place for bicycle tourists and their journals not more than an hour ago. Small world. How crazy is that?
By the way that is a very cool site for those into bicycle travel and camping and stuff.

Not thrilled about all the mods to that Bubble, but who knows - maybe it was already damaged.

I'm all for repurposing vintage Airstream to suit all kinds of new projects.... but still, there's a pit in my stomach every time I see wall that has been chopped out to make room for a stage, motorcycle ramp or juice bar counter. It really relegates it into the retail life, preventing it from ever again roaming the highways as just a good old trailer.

I think that most of the old guys that are repurposed don't have a real chance of ever going camping again. Serving sushi to rich tourists a Seaside sure beats resting at the junk yard.

The community of Seaside in the Florida Panhandle where these commercial Airstreams are in service has interesting covenants regard RVs. Seaside's covenants prohibit the overnight parking of any RV anywhere in the community, "except Airstream travel trailers". These covenants were written in 1981 when the community was established.

That's an interesting covenant.. I was wondering how a community like Seaside would allow a *trailer* to be parked along the road (or any mobile type unit), especially as a more-permanent fixture. I am really surprised.
