Greetings from the Florida Panhandle

It's sounding like a great adventure. Keep the reports coming.

Looks like you may be stopping at Custer State Park in SD.

If so and you are camping at Legion Lake, look out for this guy.

We stopped at a KOA today. No masks in the office!!!! It was good to see some smiles again!

(That's all I'm going to say!)

We made it to Rock cut State Park in Illinois. Just north of Chicago.

The drive-through Chicago (or I should say, the bypass around Chicago) was as horrible as I remembered years ago. 5 and 6 lanes of traffic and lots of trucks. It is relentless and you have to be on your toes! I was traveling at my comfortable 63 mph and everyone else was doing 70-80. I tried to stay in the far right lane, but when the exits were coming fast a furious, I moved one lane over from the right.

It was OK, just have to pay attention!

Alde system

We made it to the furthest north we will ever be on this trip. Hixton, Wisconson and a very nice KOA. I'm still surprised at the emptiness of the campgrounds we are seeing. Well, it is a bit early and some kids are still in school. It is also quite brisk in the mornings. The owner of this KOA said it was in the twenties the last few days. Last night we went down to 42 degrees.

The Alde system is chugging away and producing very even heat. I run the Alde with the propane selected. After 5 nights of 32-35 degree temperatures, we've used about 9% of our 80 lbs of propane. I know that reading is pretty arbitrary as the sensors are not that accurate, but it does tell me that the Alde system is very efficient. Nice quiet even heat!

A problem!

Here are images of my bathroom. The back wall trim has slid down and a gap has formed at the top. The trim has slid down past the countertop. I thought I could bring it back up by using my window tool, but it will not move. I am guessing that this will have to be repaired by Jackson Center. I am going to call them to set up an appointment at an Airstream dealer south of Sanjose, but I've been there before and I just might let them do the broken blind, but cabinet worK? Not!

Stayed at a very nice KOA last night in Jackson, Minnesota. Bubbly campground owners and of course the "chauffer" to your site by golf cart. Very large sites for a KOA.

Sunrise 6:00 am. Time to get on the road.

Al's Oasis Campground was our next stop. Right on the freeway (well, next to the freeway). At first, I said, "What have I got myself into!" We had reservations and when stopping at the office we found no one there. Door locked and a set of envelopes on the door. One for this type site and another for a different site. I told my wife lets just pick a back-in site as we reserved.
So we did.

The sites were quite large and had full hookups. The grass was brown and the site gravel was getting a little sparse. I have to say, it was not bad for a night's stay. Maybe a little expensive at $49/night, but down the road it was worth the choice. Big Al has a grocery store that is amazing! I should have taken pictures. Much better than any of the grocery stores we've seen so far. They even had a butcher shop, something you don't see in many grocery stores in the West. I bought the pork chops and waved at the butcher cutting meat through the window.

I've died and went to heaven!

At the recommendation of some Airdreamers here in the forum, we booked 3 nights at Rafter J Bar Ranch in Hills city South Dakota. Wow! What a campsite! What a campground!

The "ranch" is huge with individual campsites that could almost hold twice the size of my trailer and TV. I ask for a "satellite" friendly site and they accommodated us with a site at the end of LINE loop (well technically it is not a loop). My wife's pretty little picture marks our campsite. Thanks Google!

Expensive? Yes. I think we paid $78/night for full hookups and a herd of Deer playing in the field next to us.

I am impressed!

Mount Rushmore and Crazy horse

We went to Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy horse memorial today. Rushmore is remodeling and they are almost finished. Remarkable traffic handling! You receive a ticket at the front gate that you can pay on machines throughout the park at your leisure. It stops long lines at the gate!

Crazy Horse was about the same as I saw it back when I was 7. Mt. Rushmore took 13 years and had 400 workers to complete. Crazy horse is ten times bigger, both sides of the mountain are being sculpted, and how many workers?

Five!

It might get finished four or five hundred years from now if they hire more workers and you know how hard it is to find workers today.

Here are some pics:

We went to Hill city for my birthday today. Quaint little town about 2 miles north of Rafter J Bar Ranch. There is a train museum there and lots of shops to visit. We ate at Moose saloon (or something like that). A forgettable place!

Custer State Park

What a gem! Custer state park is a remarkable place. We had one day to visit and there is so much to see and do, we could spend weeks here.

We only had time to go on the Wildlife loop drive. Buffalo, bighorn sheep, deer, and a two-hour drive through the prairie. They have a buffalo roundup that they herd 1300 buffalo into corrals. That will be September 23rd-25th this year. It is open to the public and to all you wannabe cowboys out there. See description in the link.

There are numerous campgrounds in the park and all of them seemed very accessible and available (it still early though). We would most certainly want to stay here for two weeks if it fits our schedule. Maybe when we come back through?

Sorry, we did not have our cameras out that much but I will include a link to their website.

Highly recommend the Buffalo roundup, we attended a couple of years ago.

At Legion Lake campground in Custer SP, we had a daily visitor.

Oh my! You would not want to disturb him when he's

Here is our setup for, well, the "business" side of our lifestyle. Several years ago we added a water softener. It works very well. It can soften 1500 gallons of water and is regenerated by adding 1/3 of a round container of Morton salt. That means we can go for about a month or a month and a half between regeneration.

It does weigh a bit but fits fine in our side compartment of our Classic.

Thanks . . . curious whether you drink your onboard water, and whether the softening process compromises the taste?

Thanks,

Leaving the Blackhills and continuing west, I noticed that Google maps wanted to take me through the Thunder basin national grasslands. Even though it might be interesting to see the grasslands, I thought it might be more interesting to head south. Well, best-laid plans and all, google maps changed my route (I don't know why) to go right through the grasslands!

Well, it was interesting but one of the most boring rides I've ever been on! I would have turned around if I caught the mistake early, but seeing the milage was the same, we thread on.

Here are some images of grass.
