Accident I95 southbound north of Kittery Maine

Just were passed by double axle excella pulled by white ford. We were doing 60 in slow lane but they were in passing lane moving fast. Next thing we knew - brake lights and came past trailer flipped on side.. Driver out okay. I have pictures but not sure how to post.

Thanks for posting, Jaywaltz. I don't think I will ever understand what the hurry is. I'm glad everyone is OK. Speed kills. 60-65 is plenty fast.

Jaywaltz - Thanks for posting... but not the Airstream Sighting we like to see. Sounds like you were very close to seeing what happened.

This is about 15 minutes north of us. Glad to see from your picture the owner was out and walking around.

Unfortunate event.

That looks like a Ford Excursion.

Largest SUV ever built.

I'm guessing he has cancelled his excursion. Sorry couldn't resist.

Very glad everyone, (including other motorists) are okay.

Cheers
Tony

Any chance that they ran over something like a large animal, or debris? the undersides of the tank enclosures and belly pan look pretty dented/rimpled IMO. FWIW the tires look OK, as in no obvious extreme damage/shredding visible.

Also looks like they ended up coming to rest in a 180 position to the traffic flow. What a ride that must have been! Amazing the Excursion stayed upright, or did it roll also in the middle of the event? The roof looks OK IMO.

Lucky folks!

Peter

PS -- Thanks for the report and photos Jaywaltz.

Just found this -- Excursion looks OK in this view also IMO:

This alert probably covers it IMO:

There was a report that they were moving pretty quickly in the left-hand lane. Otherwise, this concerns me because I tow with an Excursion and have a 30 foot Airstream.

I spent two years dialing in my Excursion with suspension modifications and just feel it is such an excellent tow vehicle as it is a heavy duty truck with a lot of weight over the backend because of the SUV body and softer springs when compared to its F250 cousin.

I'd really love to know what happened, it would be great to know the causes of all these accidents so that we could do what we need to do to be safer.

That YouTube link is of another unrelated RV sway wreck, and the action ends at 1:10.

Staying on topic, does anyone have any further information about the I-95 Airstream wreck?

I will look for updates at the news sources.

Here is the original news source for the last photo posted:

. . . and their FaceBook page in case anyone is a FB member:

That YouTube link was posted recently on another thread here, causing it to sway out of control also . . .

Returning to the topic of the AS crash on I-95, here is another FB report with a post about the same location:

Thanks again for the post and photos. How fast would you estimate that rig was going, and what is the speed limit for that stretch of I-95 if you recall?

Have you seen any additional news coverage of this roll-over?

Thanks,

Peter

Speed limit was 70. Traffic moderate and going at good clip. Trucks and cars in the center lane were all passing us. I saw photo later of the TV loaded on wrecker and I guess the trailer removal took several hours.

Thanks, what news source or TV station carried that photo? Were you still fairly local to the crash, or had you moved on up the road? The footage you saw [if television] may still be available online, with a possible interview with the driver. [Edit -- is Troutboy's article in the next post the news source you saw?]

Thanks for the follow-up.

PS -- Troutboy has started a new thread with one of the YouTube videos from yesterday, with the box trailer passing the semi and rolling over:

Thanks for the new thread.

Just thinking that with RV sales (including Airstream)increasing into record numbers and many of those drivers being new to towing, every opportunity to discuss how to avoid these situations and what to do if it ever happens can't hurt. May save a life down the road (pardon the pun). But I do get your point about staying on topic.
