A Very Sad Sight

Today, we were towing Lucy eastbound on I-84. We had just crossed from Oregon into Idaho and were at about mile marker 5 when we came across a terrible sight. There was an Airstream up side down in the median. It had separated from the tow vehicle which was on its side in the median.

The Police and Rescue units were already on the scene. We couldn't tell about any injuries. SuEllyn was able to take a couple of pictures as we went by. I hope that everyone involved was alright.

That looks like a mid 70's rear bath model. The axles and tires are intact. I wonder if there was a catastrophic failure of some sort or maybe the driver fell asleep at the wheel or lost control somehow? Hopefully all involved are ok.

Bad deal! I hope everyone came through ok. On some selfish level I want to know what happened! What do I need to know to avoid being here someday myself?

It looks like the white truck may have a stinger still sticking out from under the bumper. It may be a Ha or Propride. I doubt it caused the accident.

Curious as to why no tag/plate on the AS? I wonder if someone had just purchased it and was hauling home without WDH or sway control? I have done that in the past for short distances using my F350 dually.

On closer inspection, it can not have been a Hensely, because there is nothing attached to the A frame of the trailer. I see no numbers, so it is not likely a WBCCI member. 8 out of 10 Airstream owners are not members of WBCCI.

It's hard to determine what was attached to the rear of the TV. There are several wires on the bottom of the trailer heading back to the rear bumper area. My thought on this is that it could have been for temporary lights that were attached to the bumper. This would be consistent with a new buyer towing the unit home.

Like most other sad pictures of this type, we may never know the details. We can be pretty certain that this Airstream has sadly seen it's last day on the road.

I went on the Idaho State Police web site and saw nothing in their report. What date did you see the accident? wolf146

The photos were taken on Saturday, may 26, 2012, at 4:30 PM on I-84, Mile 5, in Idaho.

Yikes! It's photos like this that finally convinced me that I needed to shell out the extra $$$ for a more solid TV and a Pro Pride.

I really hope that no one was hurt.

Were there high winds at the time? I multi-clicked on the pics and the tires looked intact.

Looks like the jack stand is down pretty low. I wonder if it caught the ground? I've seen this thing before. A jeep grand Cherokee on its side with a 28 foot sob on its side behind it. It was In The wind river range in wy. I'm guessing the TV was to small for the trailer in that case, either way it's a sad sight.

Thats a shame. Maybe he had a long trip, fell asleep, swerved and lost it in the slope on the median.

Wreck -

Crosswinds? New owner towing home to rehab? No license plate, might have temporary running lights - and at the risk of making a totally tasteless joke "talk about rear end separation!" But seriously, obviously a roll like that COULD break the body loose from the shell, but is it possible that the shell broke loose from the floor, caught air, and pulled the Airstream over on it's side?

Anyone get an update? I surely hope the people walking around the wreck WERE from the upturned truck.

Paula

Then rental truck parked in the background is towing a truck on a flatbed. I wonder if these people are together and were moving a lot of stuff.

It does look like they were moving the unplated Airstream to somewhere. The trees in the background look like the wind was blowing pretty well.
