A new (maybe) state park in North Carolina

New state parks are hard to come by. Today's legislatures don't seem to have an interest in establishing facilities for public recreation.

Which makes this news surprising.

The North Carolina Legislature is working on a bill to establish a new state park, and this one would be a beauty.

It is a big parcel, more than 1,900 acres, up in the mountains, not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway, Mount Pisgah and Asheville.

I'd say it looks like a sure thing to pass (already approved by the Senate), but NC's lawmaking body has proved to be unpredictable, and a bit crazy, in recent years.

Will it have a campground? Maybe.

Here's the story in the Asheville Citizen-Times: https://www.citizen-times.com/story/...rk/1556637001/

New State Park

Always nice to add a park and conserve some land. However, maybe the same folks who worked so hard on this project could spend some time trying to fix the 500 million in deferred maintenance on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Since I live less than an hour away from proposed new park I would welcome it.

First the State and the U.S. Forest Service & the National Park Service need to take care of what we already have and have neglected for decades. The facilities along the Blueridge Parkway are, in some cases, awful. We go to the Pisgah Inn on Mt. Pisgah often. It is in decent shape but it is privately managed. Many of the current State parks are crying for funds to maintain or improve the physical plant.

It would be nice to hear from Rep. Meadows about that.

One way to get some additional funding for current parks would be to impose an axle tax on pure electric cars, think Tesla, that are using our roadways and not contributing to the upkeep through fuel taxes.
So much per mile driven paid every year at tag renewal time. Everyone should contribute there fair share.
