A Garbage Can!

Story time-

Our much anticipated wait! The Pee Wee Big Adventure to again return to Blue Water Key RV Resort. The 1/2 $1350 deposit was down for 6 months and then with our luck the day we have to leave Monsoons descended on Florida. Spent a nice night at Jonathan Dickerson State Park with 40 mph winds. Stabilizers down concrete pad on the truck ball 50 amps we were snug and slept well.

Next morning Driving down to the Keys on US 1 winds were 30 + MPH things going well speed 35-45 speed limit and out of no where from a curb side street here comes a huge Round Plastic Garbage rolling and bouncing fast!

Could not swerve in busy traffic and BAM it hits the Right Front Segment protector ( which did its job ) denting the lower section ripping out its bottom stainless trim, then it goes under the trailer and bends our stabilizer handle 45 degrees back pushing the bent handle up into the black trim denting that!

We moved on to Blue Water, looked at our $340 a night platinum site overgrown with jungle soaking wet sand driveway and said yep Merry Christmas. Lost the deposit pulled right and never looked back. Some say oh suck it up happy happy I say I'm home now the trailer is in it's time out storage stall awaiting repairs at JC.

So if you thought your were having a bad day you can say man at least I did not experience that. I thought a deer or dog might get us one day but a plastic garbage did that much damage? This tops the Raven out West that impaled its beak through our road side window shield. The dent can be fixed but my Happy Memories of 2 previous fun stays at Blue Water RV BC! Before Covid and Hurricanes are not the same as what i saw. Not for that Price!

Merry Christmas all- Thanks my therapy vent is over now.

Wow! You got to Blue Water Key, and left? Yikes! We are headed there, but not until February. So sorry you got hit by the blowing trash can, and even more sorry you found BWK such a mess you couldn’t stay. I would think that they’d get it cleaned up pretty quickly, it must have really been torn up.
Hope your repairs are done quickly and properly.

Misery likes company - we were within an hour of home after a long two-week trip in October and heard a bang going through a construction zone in the dark. When we got home the protector was dented and the awning arm was pulled out from the frame. There were plastic shards on the protector, so I'm guessing we were attacked by a traffic barrel (probably more substantial than a garbage container). It did $3,700 in damage and we have a date with JC in March. Our insurance covered it (minus deductible), did you make a claim?

Enjoy your stay

We hope you find it much better as we did twice before. I’m sure
1: We had a booked site they sold it and the only spot left was a premium upgrade that did not justify the up charge

2: I was in a foul mode as JC just repaired our steps and the tin outta our costs and that lasted 3 months !

3: When your backing in they put you on your blind side 5th wheels easy a 30 not so much your 25 which we had before easy but make sure you have the good owner who stays at your driver side watching out for you carefully. We had the newbie!

4: Look up the African Queen the real movie one in Key Largo and take the 90 min canal cruise and tell us how it was. We were supposed to be on it today.

Will do, on the African Queen. Is it up in Key Largo, that can be a drive from BWK. I’ll definitely look into it. We did get signed up for the boat trip out to Dry Tortugas. We waited too long to try and sign up last time. No openings were available.
We actually signed up for the same spot this time that we were in last time, so I know our little 25 fits in with lots of room to spare.
Sorry again about the damage to your AS. Hope you get it back better than new.
Only thing I’m dreading on this trip is going through Atlanta.

Funny, we stayed at Boyd’s in Key West in November. Very nice (not as much as your place) and less expensive. On the way down one of those orange cones was in my lane in a construction area. The trailer nicked it without any drama. When we got to the campground the front left stabilizer crank was really bent to the point it would interfere with the AS. I bent it back to make it work and wondered for some time what caused it….until I remembered the little cone.

There are very few times when it’s good to go through ATL with a trailer in tow. We just did it on day after Christmas and wasn’t bad (I285). During normal times I’d say bypass ATL regardless of time of day. If headed to eastern FL hit US129 through Athens down to I 75 in Macon. If going to FL gulf coast get to Rome GA and take US27 south. The ATL drivers are crazy, swinging across 3 or 4 interstate lanes at a time. …and I used to live in metro ATL.

Angry Just Did Atlanta

I drove through Atlanta yesterday (Dec 27, 2023) via I-75. We hit North Atlanta about 11am (before bypass) and encountered serious construction with right-hand lane closed for tree-trimming on shoulder. Between additional construction and accidents, it took OVER 3 hours to drive through Atlanta in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week in the middle between 2 major holidays.

I haven't made bit through Atlanta in less than two hours in a long long time. We started going through Birmingham, but now I’m hearing it’s a mess. Nashville can be a disaster also. I am going to try KK4YZ’s recommendations posted above.

Are you taking east or west route? Just curious.

I'm leaning towards the western route. But I really haven't looked at it that closely. Leaving in mid February.

Neither way is particularly fast, but a lot less stressful and safer.
