2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Caravanas de Mexico, which has done AS caravans in the past, is considering a mid Feb 2024 trip down Baja with a ferry option to view the April 8th total Solar eclipse in Mazatlan or Durango. It may, or may not be, a club sanctioned trip. There are several non AS caravans planned as well for this, both mainland and Baja. send me an email to beddows1 at telus.net and I can provide some details. Some of these trips have not yet been posted, some are already full. This is one of the most significant solar eclipses this century with over 5 min of totality and Mexico is the best location to see it. There are also Copper Canyon options.

Last Chance National Forest Reservations Eclipse 2024

Just thought I'd mention the 6-month window on NF and NP reservations encompasses the Eclipse date 4/8/2024 is nye and some are still available. I was on Recreation.gov earlier today and found a spot in Arkansas. Last I looked there were still openings at the Quarry Cove (and some campgrounds close by), near to the maximum length totality. We did the 2017 eclipse and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience (well, now hopefully twice-in-a-lifetime).

After the 2017 eclipse, my initial plan was to head to Texas for the 2024. But as it's been approaching, the wife's work schedule around that time wouldn't let her have near enough time off for us to make it that far and back. We'll have to be heading towards Ohio (and hope the weather holds). Great idea about looking for NF and NP campgrounds, but with the way I was restricting the location, I started reaching out to private campgrounds (and, most at the time when I started a year ago, kept replying "we're closed then, come two weeks after that!" Not like I get to set the date of the eclipse! lol).

I do hope everyone that has an interest in it, finds a good spot and has a great view for it.

You are of course playing the weather odds. You chances of clear skies are best in Mexico where they are about 80%, but there is no guarantee even there. We have a physics professor along as an eclipse expert and he will be participating in an experiment to measure the warping of space due to the suns gravity.. We actually have some spaces still. A lot of people reserved 3 or 4 years ago and life has thrown a few of them a curveball since.

Alas, a trip to Mexico sounds like a great adventure, but we won't have the time. It's a 12hr drive from Minnesota to Arkansas and it should be spring there so that is attractive.

Your chart spurred me to look for some data. I found this which gives Arkansas about the same or a little better than Mazatlan, 50/50 (somewhat contrary to your information). From this map it looks pretty dismal for much of the Midwest and Canada.

I'm making my plans for upstate NY. April 8 is early in their season, so we'll see what I end up with.
