2017 Ford F-150 Platinum Payload
I'm shopping for a new F-150. I've been waiting for the arrival of a 2017 F-150 Platinum 4x4 3.5 EB super crew short bed with max towing package at our local dealership to confirm max payload for this specific unit (basically with all available options, including sunroof). I knew all the options would significantly reduce payload from the advertised 2030 pounds, but I was not prepared for the degree of the hit. Max payload for this unit is only 1464 pounds, per the door sticker. I know the heavy duty payload package will help the situation, but I don't think that option is available on the Platinum model - only on the Lariat, XLT and LT units, as far as I can tell. Is there anyone with a Platinum unit that has substantially greater payload with an original equipment configuration - if so, how is it configured? Thanks, Joe

I believe you are correct in your assumption about Platinum max payload. I recently spec'd out a new one with knowledgeable dealer where I purchased my Platinum in 2012, and we ended up with a loaded Lariat, still equipped well, but without sunroof, which I rarely used anyhow. I did have retractable running boards, tailgate step, and we got the payload to 2000lbs, for about $6K less than Platinum, which would not have same payload. I also included the heavy duty payload package to get there, but not sure what that would do to the ride...I believe it would include 5 leaf springs, vs 3 or 4?
Any other information from others in the "know" is appreciated.

I've a spreadsheet that has all the weights and lets you select which options in order to get relatively close to what the payload will be.

You can then also add your cargo estimates to see where you land.
IMHO the best way to go with a 150 and tow is getting HDP unless poyou dont put anything in the truck other than yourself

We have a 2013 Platinum (pre-aluminum) and the Payload is 1164 pounds if I remember correctly. So we have to watch what goes into the truck. Mostly it's just the two of us so not a problem. If we take out some of the grandkids next summer it's going to be an interesting challenge.

That payload number is some 275 pounds higher than the 2010 F-150 Platinum I drove previously.
I like my trucks optioned up though and all of that stuff reduces payload. Even on my new Ram 2500, the payload isn't as high as a stripped model.

That's a great question. Last year we had three grandkids, us and our dog in a 1965 16' Shasta so we are looking forward to the relative luxury of our 23D with bath!

I have had two F150 EcoBoost Platinums. A 2011 with about 1150 payload and then a 2015 with right at 1500. I think it was actually in the area of 1475 or so. I have not looked at the recent order guide but I believe you are correct in that the Heavy Duty Payload is not avail. I opted for a 2017 F250 with the 6.7 Diesel. Got payload up over 2000. Can get considerably more with the 6.2 gas. Good luck and happy travels.

Patiently waiting to see more info on the 2018 F-150 diesel. Especially payload and towing limits.

My 2016 F-150, XLT Plus, Super Cab with a 3.5 Eco Boost, 3.55 gears and a 6.5' bed is rated for 1989 pounds of payload.

For leveling purposes, a set of Firestone air bags will help out with the load and handling.

This is the exact TV I'm looking at to pull the new FC 25FB I'm ordering. But, I'm still vetting the F-150 Platinum against the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500. I like the F-150 safety/technology package. What final criteria led you to the F-150? I've never owned a PU before, so I'm a bit challenged to know what route to go. Thanks.

I have a '14 Platinum, 6.5', 3.5 Eco, 3:73 axle, loaded w/ all options and HD payload. My payload is listed at 1524#.
That does not leave much to put in the TV when towing a 2008 27FB Classic with measured tongue weight of 1080#. I am currently upgrading the WD system that came with it to a 15K system.However that does NOT help with payload.
Part of the issue is the PLAT uses 20" wheels w/ P-metric tires. P-metric XL and LT tires have greater load capacity, but this may not be a direct addition to the posted payload.
To prevent this kind of issue again, I will reluctantly go to a F250 gas with the next truck, unless Ford really upgrades the payload on F150's.

we purchased a 2016 XLT F-150 SuperCrew with the HD Payload package with a payload sticker of 2434 lbs.
I don't think the HD Payload comes in the Platinum, though. I think it only comes as high as the Lariat?

Good video. From my experience towing on the ball or towing with the WD, I've found they are right on. My truck is not level empty, but if I take that into consideration, their results cooinside with my seat of the pants feelings. Again, great video, very informative.

That video is giving a choice,of either or the hitch or the bags. I am an advocate of both. Even with the hitch, air bags give you more stability and better leveling. Also pretty much eliminates the " interstate hop" on the longer trailers.

But one needs to be very careful with when and how much to inflate the bags in the process. Very easy to destroy the weight balance equation of a properly set up wd by adding air after setting wd.
