Renovating Renata - a 1986 Argosy Squarestream

Hi Everyone,

New and addicted to this whole crazy renovating idea and new to these forums. Forgive us while we figure things out.

We just bought Renata. She was gutted by the PO who saved all of her inner parts, which came with the purchase. Our plan is a renovation versus restore, so we're not sure how much we'll be re-using, but at least we have good templates. She's a little scary looking at the moment, as you can see in the photos. Last weekend was our first weekend with her and we took off the inner skins which where a combination of thin plywood and a type of stiff cardboard (along the end caps).

We're currently trying to figure out the next steps - mainly, are we doing a shell off or shell on subfloor replacement? You can see in the photos that the PO started to remove the subfloor but didn't finish. The spray foam in the corners is going to make this difficult. I'm wondering if any of you have had to deal with spray foam like this and how you were able to get down to the bolts (just start digging)? We're open to any ideas/comments/suggestions. Happy to be here!

(Ok, having trouble figuring out the best option to upload photos here - do I upload them to the gallery and then link them? or do I have to post them somewhere else, like flickr, and then link to them?)

-Courtney

Ok, found some help in the forums - the trick is to "Attach Files".

Here are the photos referenced above of Renata and the foam in the channel.

Thank you! I found some photos you posted here of yours and it looks to be in much better shape than ours. What have you done as far as renovations go?

I'm renovating a 89 Squarestream. I could not find any replacement skins, so I used 1/4 birch plywood, with 1/4 underlayment foam from Lowes, and aluminum for the corners.

Hi ktmkirby, you've made a lot of progress, looks great! We watched your videos (shell off), very inspiring work you've done.

We've been considering what you've done (combo of wood and aluminum skins), but are also considering all aluminum. Was the cost of the birch much less than doing it all in aluminum?

Also, since you replaced your subfloor, wondering if you encountered the foam in the corners like in the photos I attached in my previous post. If so, how did you get it out to get to the bolts?

Thanks!
Courtney

Aluminum was cheaper than the birch, but you'll need thicker foam backing, so that you have the right thickness for the window flanges.
Those bolts are actually some kind of rivet. Most of mine were rusted away. The ones that weren't I cut off with a sawsall from the inside. The shell was bolted back on with cadmium coated bolts with lock washers and double nutted.
The foam in the corners I scraped away to allow for drainage, if any water gets in. I drilled drainage holes in every section.

Hi! We are renovating a Squarestream (also a 1986 Argosy) in Canton, Georgia just north of Atlanta. Our number is 770-570-6235 if you want to compare notes! Or trade parts. Anything you are looking for? We have a nice sofa bed we just took out you’d be welcome to, for example. Katie

That would be hard to find. Can it be repaired?
