Vintage '64 Safari...

Saw a '64 Safari in a remote corner of the North Carolina mountains. It's sitting at a 'Reclaimed' center, looks weathered bad but 90% all there, maybe even towable. Needs a total restoration but with a price tag of $12,500. Is that even reasonable? Has rear bath/shower combo & front twin beds. I want the challenge but would like some feedback before haggling with the owner.
Thanks,
Jofreebs

Yep..i imagine it's been there forever & seen by many. I assume the price turns most away but is it a fair asking considering it's highly restorable.

It has been about a year ago I found it.Really cool place its at but from what I remember it is one of the most complete I have found. I think it had some rot issues in the floor at the back. To me it is way overpriced, but then again I think most of the ones available now are priced ridiculously stupid money. I think a fair price for that camper would be more in the 3500.00 dollar range not the 12,000 dollar range. For it to be done correctly you could easily spend 10,000 cash and a thousand hours or more
restoring it.

I would think that is about twice what they should be asking. But I guess if you can do the work yourself and willing to spend around 20k on the renovation, then go for it. What shape is the exterior in? Would you have to deal with dents or exterior skin replacement? Sounds like a shell off renovation. I would certainly negotiate the asking price. Good luck and keep us posted. Bubba

Bob.
2003 was pre financial system meltdown and everything was really bringing stupid money. Kinda like what people are doing again now. I will wait patiently for things to come back around again and buy them for a song like I did in 2008-09.

Interesting...i offered 2500 & got his best I'm insulted, look. Apparently this Safari has a history which he thinks is worth paying for. He wouldn't consider anything under 5 figures so...we'll see if it's still there next time we're out this way. Maybe by that time, he'll take that song mentioned above!
