How much material you need depends on the width of the material, the "repeat" of any pattern and the "nap" of the fabric. If you get fancy with tufting or bias cording that adds to the fabric you'll require. I would personally avoid buttons and probably cording too - you want to make cushions you can SLEEP on so anything that's bumpy or protruding is a bad idea.
In addition to fabric, you should know a good bit about foam you'll use for the cushions. The weight vs. durability choices are pretty significant - and this is one area where your retail fabric store has very limited choices at pretty high prices.
If you have a Handcock Fabric store in your area they are very good at helping inexperienced people learn the basics of upholstery. They - and many smaller independent stores - have classes, or can sell you to a book/video course. Invest in this FIRST. It will teach you how to measure fabric, etc.
Cost to have upholstery professionally done? Wow - that varies all over the place. If you're lucky (and persistent) you can find people who have access to wholesale priced foam and fabric and can do the job for you for about the same cost you could do it yourself. Figure on interviewing half a dozen people - and look at samples of their work.
Have fun, Paula
