Really new here

I have been told that the 1955 Silver Streak in my Dad's back yard was made before airstreams, is that something you may know? The reason I asked is this is the closest forum I could find with the word Silver in it. Please guide me to the correct forum if not.

Thanks

To find more threads started by owners of trailers like yours, you might peruse the "Vintage Kin" section.

The first Airstreams were made in the 1930's and by 1955 many had been made. A number of forum members have such antiques.

But, never the less, you have an old Silver Streak, and you are very welcome to join in the Aluminum fun we have here on the Airforums. A lot of things are similar, that is repair and restoration issues.

The original streamlined aluminum trailer was the Bowlus in 1933. Airstream started making them in 1937, copying the Bowlus after Bowlus stopped making trailers.

The Silver Streak company was an offshoot of Airstream, I believe some Airstream employees went off on their own to build a better trailer.

They did make some excellent trailers, I believe in the sixties and seventies they made some of the best built, most expensive trailers on the market.

Your 1955 would be one of the early ones and could be of some historical interest, at least in vintage trailer circles. Recommend you be careful not to change anything.

There was a good Silver Streak web sites a few years back, have not looked at them lately but a search should turn up something.

In any case you are always welcome here, your Silver Streak is practically a member of the Airstream family or at least, related by divorce

Toms' Web Page

I did a search for Silver Streak Trailers and it was half way down the first page.

Actually, the Bowlus Road Chief was built from November 1934 thru September 1936. The Airstream Clipper was introduced in January 1936 eight months before Bowlus went out of production.

Silver Streak was NOT started by Airstream employees. Silver Streak bought the rights to the Clipper from a company named Curtis Wright in 1949. Wally Byam worked for Curtis Wright in 1946 and early 1947 before restarting Airstream in May 1947. There is no doubt that while Wally Byam worked at Curtis Wright, he designed their riveted aluminum Clipper which was introduced in early 1947.

Here is a photo of the Bowlus Road Chief taken at the Airstream factory. I thought the entry door in the front over the frame was unique. Airstream has quite a collection of vintage Airstreams in their museum.

The Bowlus name is on a new aluminum high end trailers, like $200k for one. But I understand it is a fantastic piece.
