Hehe, no problem on finding other projects to move on to

Ill make a note of the dupont tire spray.
WD-40 looks great, but Im a little worried about it degrading the sealant between the panels as its petrolium based.
This assumes that there is any sealant left after 44 years.
Also it hazed one of my plastic clearance light lenses.

I think you'd be pleased with the Dupont tire spray. It is very easy to apply, actually is good for the plastic and rubber parts, and is easy to re-apply. It also doesn't attract dust and dirt like WD-40, nor is it greasy. I use an old bath towel to wipe it dry after spreading it on with an old wash cloth. Leaves a nice sheen that is not sticky or smelly. Just be sure it says Teflon on the bottle. The bottles are black, and I've seen them in almost all auto parts stores.

We saw an 86 Avion for sale on the way to look at a local campground. Looked nice from what we could see. Has all the little awnings and looked well kept. I wrote the number down if anyone is interested. PM me and I will be glad to give it to you.

So the PO started stripping the anodization off this one unfortunately, and like everything else inside, he started, made a mess, and didn't finish. Any ideas on cleaning up the rest around it? Or am I going to have to "strip" the entire thing to get a uniform appearance back? He was using oven cleaner...

You cannot get the stripped portion to match the remaining annonized portion. So you either have to keep stripping and then keep it polished and protected or paint the entire trailer to a uniform silver or gray color. That would be my recommendation. I love the shiny look of a polished trailer but the annonized aluminum on the post 1964 Avions was not intended to be stripped and polished and will not hold up well unless you take great care keeping it protected with a suitable coating.

Bob Thompson painted his a AS about eleven years ago. Wonderful. Sold it just a few years ago and paint still looked close to new. DIY.

It's the only practical solution, IMHO.

Look to threads on painted trailers. Silver is "boring" (some really nice work).

I usually stay quiet around here...but I've also done a shell-off floor replacement of my Airstream.
The folks here are great, and as you've heard, 90% of questions apply to both makes (heaters, water heaters, plumbing, fridges, seams, Vulkem, tires, etc). Some stuff doesn't apply: The floor is a bit different, the frames are a bit different, and the politics are different .

Hi

That post is from 2006. Given the way people come and go on the forum, that's a long while ..... His most recent post was in 2009 ...

Reply Round Two

I don't know what happened to my post from yesterday. But I'll try to redo it.

I bought the trailer that Silverthreads mentioned, in 2006. I still have it. I drove 8 hours to get it, in Kingston, Tennessee. It's a 1987 Avion 34X. I've basically rebuilt it, from the bones up. I hooked up with Dr. G (Don Gradeless, the Inland Andy of Avion's) and he told me what to look for. In the process or rebuilding the trailer, I've learned quite a lot, and would be happy to help someone who's interested in one.

Modifications I've made include:
New Air Conditioner (used the old Coleman 13k and bypassed the circuitry to hotrod it after the control board burned up....but eventually replaced with a Carrier AiRV 15K), painted the roof white which dropped the internal temp 10 degrees, new fridge, new water heater, new ceramic elongated bowl toilet, new kitchen sink faucet, new shower curtain to replace the Avion Rube Goldberg folding rigid shower barrier thing, new plumbing, new shocks, new tires (twice), repacked the bearings (once but will again soon), 32" widescreen TV, 400w surround sound, custom bunkbeds to replace the gaucho, laminate flooring, new tail light housings of riveted aluminum, all LED lights outside, converted the 9 pin connector to a new 7 pin harness with sufficient length so it doesn't unplug when I turn right, new roof vents (Maxxair Deluxe....three of them), converted the rear twin beds to a rear King, sanded and refinished the frame.....I can't remember it all.

I've towed this rig at least 20,000-25,000 miles. It's been great. Avion's are built very stout. I could go on and on about their suspension, etc. But at any rate, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. If I can help you, I will. I've learnt a lot on here and am happy to pay it back.

Hopefully it posts this time....my post last night was three times as long....

Jim

Thanks! that was one of our first trips out in our new to us Avion. I am more obsessed, more amazed than when we first got it. It's so easy to tow, so comfortable so glorious in the summer. I just can't rant enough about Avion!

Picked up this 1979 Avion 28J from the Midwest before the weather turned. Had it towed 2000 miles to the West Coast where I’m at. Looked long and hard for one of these that wasn’t trashed and in great shape. Will spend the winter upgrading here and there. Just about finished the tow tongue with por15 and working over everything up front. New jack, chains, breakaway, battery box, twin amgs and a new equalizer hitch with sway. The propane rack was replaced as that was pretty shot and the bottles were polished out. Looking at the AC unit next. There looks to be a couple of fairly new low profile AC units now aviliable that are actually quite. Had a 1975 AS Tradewind I restored 10 years ago, and that low profile AC unit sounded life a freight train. Don’t want to repeat that tune. The rear bumper also needs to be polished out. The interior is original and also in great shape. Will leave the cabinets as original, but the flooring material needs to be ungraded. I really like the big 65 gallon fresh water tank with 35 gal black and grey tanks. All the plumbing had been upgraded to pex and there’s a recent inverter upgrade. At 5600 pounds dry, the weight to length ratio is fantastic at 28 feet. And it’s got a trunk!
