So that the flanges on the outsides are not bent down with the fantastic fans being flat and the Airstream being crowned. I think this will relieve the stress and prevent the outside mounting flanges from cracking. I also think I will get a better seal.

Hi, and it won't have a pool in the roof right behind the vent frame like mine does.

In a pinch, I have used the Big Box gray polyurethane stuff that was for sealing concrete. It flows just like the other stuff and sticks like a leach on a freshman's bottom.

My brother came over early and we shot the subframe on with no issues. I then went to the box store and found a tube of poly sealant and installed the fan. I will wait until its cooler outside to put on another fillet seal. I'm going to start on the rear fan after I cool off some, most likely won't have time to install it until I get back from the Marianas.

What kind of vent did you install? I am assuming it has a metal frame instead of a plastic one or did you add the metal sub frame? I have seen alot of folks on here install vents with no frame at all other than the plastic flange that you screw down to the skin. They remove the original proper frame that Airstream installs.

It's a standard PVC Framed Fantastic Fan. The sub frame I fabricated is flat topped with curved "L" angles riveted to the skin that match the contour of the Airstream on the front and back side and a "U" channel on the side with the flanges bent over 90 on the skin side and under 90 on the other. The frame only protudes .125 on the crown but .3125 on the fore and aft frames. So what I have is a flat fan mounted to the contoured exterior skin

Thanks alot. The first one is always the hardest one, the next one will be easier. What I didn't mention is the box is made from .063 6061-T6, the flat stock was bent in an "L" shape and then a 45 degree relief was cut in the middle and then bent 90. Two sections were then welded together to form the box. I had to have this welded as I do not have a TIG welder. I had to cut a 16.250 X 16.250 hole in the exterior skin. The for and aft attach angles are .750 X.750 X .063 6061-T6 and the shrunk to match the Airstream contour. The side "U''s are also .063 6061-T6 broke to form the channel .750 X.750 X 1.750

I don't think you will have to worry about the roof caving in around that vent if you were to step near it.

Personally I think an airplane could land on his roof and it wouldn't cave in!
Nice work Kip, as always.... Glad to hear the shoulder is getting better!

Looks fantastic!
No, there's no problem walking on the roof of Kip's GT. It is nice to see the inside of an Aristream so beautifully built.
Beautiful, Kip.

Thanks for the accolades. I enjoy the challenges of my Airstream projects as I'm doing less and less metal work at work and it's just a way to keep my hand in it.
Below is a picture of our temporary bed shelf and galley as we define the layout of our reconfigured Globetrotter.

Kip,
Thanks for the excellent pictures and information. Your airframe, err trailer, will be hanging in there in 2113. I just hope that folks a hundred years from now will realize that your Globetrotter is not a stock example just as it came from the factory!

Now, just to be clear, I intend to happily subject the community to many more science projects. We will delve into arcane topics, debating even the inconsequential nuances.
But, why can't the occasional repair just be simple, easy, straightforward, just like you planned it, quick? Why does the "correct" repair require an in-depth understanding of metalurgy, fatigue, fastener mechanics, humidity, vapor condensation, compatibility of elastomers, adhesion and durability of paint, strenght of materials, stress risers, color variations in aluminum alloys, proper esthetics of repair appearance, axle spring rates, vibration induced failure in electrical harnesses, blah blah blah?
One day I'd like to just take a piece of aluminum and screw it to the shell and say "ha, problem solved!"
I love learning, but once in a while I'd like a quickie, thank you very much.

Ha... Funny quote I had to post. My sentiments exactly! Its interesting to see us all go through the same cycle at different times. I read a post from Marzboy, where he was offering some input to someone many steps behind him and he said something to the effect of how far he had come and glad to be past all the first steps in beginning the restoration...
The roller coaster of emotions ranging from the excitement of bringing home your new airstream, then ambition of simply "cleaning" it up, but quickly becoming overwhelmed when you realize that your floor is rotten, frame is rusted through and...... next thing you know you have the shell sitting on the ground....
Thanks to everyone on this site. There is ALOT to learn and I could never have gotten to where I am without the generosity of all who have already walked the steps I'm walking right now.

This is one of the best threads on Air Forums. Very interesting to watch a master at work. Thank you Aerowood for taking the time to build the thread. Your Globetrotter is going to be worth a C-130 full of money when you are done. And thanks for your input to other people's projects and problems too. You're an extra class Airstreamer. (Zep is pretty darn good too!)
When can I bring my trailer over for some renovations?
