The Great Blizzard of 10 (or not)

The weatherman has been calling for two inches of snow here today, guess he missed that call. They closed schools and generally acted like the world was ending. I wanted to take the chance to try out some time lapse photography. The lack of heavier snow was a disappointment, but you play the hand you're dealt.

Pretty cool photography.

The weather folk have been hyping a "great snow" for us here for a week. In fact, it's snowing right now. But it's 40 degrees outside.

So much for the snowstorm of '10.

The great storm was a total flunkie for us. We expected it to arrive overnight, but it was +15F early this morning (pretty high compared to the last few weeks), and we topped out at around +29F today. No precipitation here in the valley floor, though it appears that the high mountains might have gotten a smidgen.

So much for all the weather warnings!

As a plow driver you learn quickly (every year it seems). That the weather person cry's snow and it only means to set the alarm so you can look out the window. For example last night "2-4 inches before midnight and 4-8 after midnight and through out the am hours"=== Look out the window @ midnight then 3:00 am then 6:00 am then on with the day...Snow started @ 8:30 am === Don't believe the weather man!

Here? Being.... Please define.

We're about 30 miles NW of seeing any precip in the last 48 hours. I heard that Madison, WI, got 8" overnight last night. So what if it is blowing 30 mph tomorrow. Only is time to put on a light sweater...

Middle TN, I have been here in dry dock since mid Nov. I expect to be here doing deferred maintenance until early Feb at which time I will point the mule south and west.

We got about 18 inches of snow in that last storm. Up here in northern Vermont we are disappointed if we do not get BIG snow. You have to embrace winter up here or you will go absolutely CRAZY!!! Not very good for camping though!!

The video was made from one picture taken every minute with my DSLR and put together to make the movie. The lack of snow was a disappointment but what can you do. It is my third try at time lapse and right now I am just working out the mechanics of time lapse. When I hit the road in Feb I will start the serious business of making shorts to share with everyone. Hopefully by that point the videos will not only be worth watching, but also worth rating. The star trail video I posted on yahoo was fun and not to bad for a first attempt I thought, even if the exposure was off. Got to love those meteors.

fizzle, fizzle, pshhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Another major Weather Event goes down as a bust.

All rain here in the Holy City, SC. They are still giving us winter driving tips on the local news. I can give you a driving tip...in this part of the country is pays to stay off the roads if they are anything but bone dry.

Exactly! Stay home if'n you can. That's what I'm doing. We eventually got some ice and snow and then the temps dropped to about 20 degrees. Roads are iced over everywhere. Would you believe there's a 27 car pileup out near the airport? Stay home around the fireplace, folks.

I don't wish to appear to be "rubbing it in" but we were spared a lot of the white stuff here. "Here" is the Connecticut River Valley region of VT and NH. The area is best known as the home of Dartmouth College.

There's perhaps 1" of snow on my Caravel and yesterday the high temp was 33 degrees. It's about 25 degrees outside now but it's only 8:30 AM.

one year time lapse...

Rodney,

Here is one from a very interesting site....One year in 90 seconds. [VIDEO] Pause it for awhile so it doesn't catch up to itself.

Snow, what snow?

The sub freezing weather is awful.
15-16 lows at night,
We (NC) are not used to the extreme cold.
Water mains bursting in the cities around me.

40 degrees will feel like Spring.

This is a picture from one in another state. New Mexico has one that runs by here in heavy-snow winters:

And here's the Big Mama that they use on the Cumbres and Toltec rail lines to remove snow up outside of Chama:

More Snow Photos

You would think that living in Austin, TX would help minimize how much cold weather you get exposed to. Not today. Attached are a couple of photos of the snowfall that we received earlier today. Fortunately it stuck only a couple of hours and has since melted. It reminds me of why I don't like winter and cold weather.
