June Photo Contest

As the winner of the May Photo Contest (and that was some tasty chili!), it is my honor to sponsor this month's version: Unexpected Surprises to the Upside.

Think about a time you were camping somewhere and you saw or did something that wasn't part of your original plans. Or perhaps it was something you were not even aware of when you first got there. Or maybe you accidentally stumbled on it. Either way, it should be a positive surprise. Tell the story and share the pics. I'll start with one from last summer....

Last August, we were making our way back home from Durango. We stopped for 3 nights in Cañon City, Colorado as a base camp for fun stuff to do in that region. We overheard the trailer next door talking about the Skyline Drive. My wife looked it up and saw it was about 3 minutes away. We hopped in the truck and checked it out. This one-way road gave amazing views of the surrounding area, since the mesa is barely wider than the road.

Here's a pic I stole from the Skyline Drive website.

But it was more than just a cool little drive. A few decades before, someone had discovered fossils of dinosaur footprints up there. Here are a few pics I captured of the fossils.

The wife loved it. The kids loved it. After a few beers, maybe even I will admit that I loved it. Now it's your turn....show us some unexpected pleasures you've found on your camping journeys.

Apostle Islands Area Campground in Bayfield WI is a great mainland stay when visiting the Apostle Islands. Across the street from the entrance is Howl Adventure Center. Hike Bike and Camp rentals and sales. To our surprise part of the Adventure center was ‘Adventure Club Brewery’. A micro brewery with a great selection and food trucks. June Photo Contest

While we had many pleasant and unexpected surprises on a big trip that we took to the West Coast and back in the late summer of 2018, there was a few that came to mind that had some photos. One of the main reasons we went from Ohio to the West Coast was to see the redwoods of California. We were hoping to camp in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park but were disappointed to find that the campground was completely full. We also called ahead to arrange a horseback ride on the beach. We showed up at the designated place and waited for about three hours but no one ever showed up except for a couple other people who were planning to go on a trail ride also. We couldn’t get ahold of the owner so we and the others left.

Now onto the good part! Instead of dry camping Jedediah State Park we ended up at Redwoods RV or we had full hook up for about the same price as well as a large spacious campsite it was very quiet. Click image for larger version

Instead of a one hour trail ride on the beach we were able to schedule a three hour trail ride through Jedediah State Park Click image for larger version

And onward to the Avenue of the Giants but we stopped by a small town called Rio Dell to check out an art gallery. There the owner spent two hours with us and gave us the whole history of Humboldt County including the marijuana industry which we knew nothing about. He said Netflix was coming out with a series about it called Murder Mountain which first aired in December 2018 which was three months after we were there.Click image for larger version

Lastly, as we were going into a gift shop at the Avenue of the Giants, the unexpected happened to Sasquatch as my 4’10” wife walked right past him and totally ignored him. I’m not sure if his feelings were hurt of if he was just a bit intimidated Click image for larger version

Hummm. Well, on my recent trip, I hadn't planned to go over the Jemez on route from Bosque Farms to Taos, but did anyway, pretty much on a whim. And I for SURE didn't plan to drive over the Black Mesa on the route from Gunnison to Ridgway, but -- because Hwy 50 is closed for significant parts of the day -- I drove it anyway. Each one added a big chunk of driving to each of the segments, but, hey, I'm retired. Why not!!

Here is Soda Falls up in the Jemez:

And while the views were immense up on Black Mesa, I enjoyed shooting the wildflowers just as much (with my new macro lens!).

Winner winner chicken dinner

And the winner is....eubank!

While there weren't many entries, it was hard to choose the "best". I like the stories that accompany everyone's pics.

Having lived in Northern New Mexico while in grad school, I have fond memories of riding my motorcycle through the Valle Grande caldera on the way to Soda Dam. Eubank wins on account of making me reminisce on some fun times.

Take it away, eubank!
