Awning open by itself is woefully inadequate at my favorite destination, which is the wilds of northeastern Canada - there is NO living underneath it without serious bug protection. It needed a no-see-um screen to keep us from being eaten alive, but we have an Interstate, which is one of the smallest Airstreams in terms of available storage. For that reason, I couldn't use one of the commercially-available canopy-style "screened porches", which are very bulky. I had to design a screening system to fit our available space. And while I was at it, I made it adjustable - if I want, can extend the awning only part way instead of fully, and the screen will still attach (important because we find that our Carefree awning is too unstable even in a light breeze, if fully extended... better to reel it in).

Blog post with sourcing and instructions here, and here's a shot of the finished product. It's not very visible in the photograph, but there is a magnetic (neodymium) doorway / closure in the middle of the front of it.

Husband and dog relaxing under the awning at Paul B. Johnson State Park. We were grateful that it didn't rain the entire trip.

August 1st 2017. Thanks to everyone who submitted photos of “life under their awning” and also to those who visited this thread. Several photos made me smile and thanks to Interblog’s solution to Canadian Black flies!!

Most of the submissions are beautiful photos of Airstreams in beautiful places making me want to hit the road. As curator of July’s Photo contest I am tasked with choosing a winner.

First place goes to pfcardwell’s photo showing us that behind all the bubbles this is what the Airstream Life is all about and the runner-up for a great nightscape goes to Tsunami-V2. Congratulations goes to ALL the entries for “living the life” and sharing!!

I pass curatorship to pfcardwell. Please let us know what the August topic / theme will be by starting a new thread and Congratulations!

The photo contest guidelines are in a Sticky topic at the top of this Photography forum:
