December 2022 Photo Contest: WINTER PLACE

I've been asked to do the December photo contest. So here goes.

FIrst, I'd like to say that the November contest was a really fine one. It upped the ante on photo quality quite a lot. Let's continue that, though in a different direction.

The winning photo of the December contest must meet the following two criteria (though it would also be great if you could tell us all where this destination is so that we might go there in the winter, too!):

1. It shows / illustrates a WINTER PLACE where you go with your Airstream. (There is no mandate that the photo will include the Airstream itself, however.)

2. It follows one of the more commonplace rules of thumb that separate snapshots from photographs, namely, the Rule of Thirds. The Wikipedia has a nice article about this rule in case you're unfamiliar with it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds

Have fun with it! And be sure to tell us all where we can do in the winter with our Airsteams!

Could you please define "winter place" a bit more?

Thanks,

Peter

Nothing deep. A place you visit with your Airstream in the winter. For example, I just got back from the Festival of the Cranes at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. It happens once a year at the beginning of December. And the place is flooded with cranes, geese, and more! It happens ... only in the winter. I camp about a 30-minute drive from the refuge.

Oh, and Rule of Thirds. Note the offset location of the landing bird. And if you divide the picture into three horizontal layers, you'll see a new dimension to the objects in the picture.

Here is my submission for the contest. Our ‘71 Overlander at Timberline Ski Resort, Mt. Hood Oregon. It was technically late spring when I took this photo because only an insane person would tow up to there in Winter because there is an average of over 300” of snowpack, over 600” of annual fall, and the road climbs 2,000 feet in elevation in 5 miles. Most of the time our trailer lives down the hill 15 minutes from the ski area.

Not a submission for the contest, but on topic. Here is our new unit that we picked up tho is weekend and we got moved into camp in the nick of time before a big snow storm.

Curious, where did you camp when at Bosque? My wife and I love that place! Also, how were the temps when you were there? Here's a link to our photos from our 2015 trip: https://markslandman.zenfolio.com/bosque

There is a private RV park near Bosque del Apache, but, frankly, it isn't much to brag about. Neither are the private RV parks in nearby Socorro. However, a recent addition in Socorro is the campground at the Socorro Soccer and Rodeo Complex. Full hookups. Still 30 bucks.

I know, I know, it's not an Airstream, but I started my journey on Airforums with my '63 "Kissin' Cousin" Avion T-20, and she still satisfies my need for vintage camping a few times a year.

When I think of winter with the Airstream, the first place that comes to mind is Death Valley. Last year marked my 3rd time for a winter trip there. This past winter was different, my oldest daughter went with me and we left Death Valley and headed up the easter sierras for the Oregon coast. This beautiful scene was from that trip.

This looks suspiciously similar to Silver Bean's location. It's my end of year chill place from the 26th to the 3rd. Glad I got in and set up last night before the storm. From midnight to 3 AM it was driving rain in 30 MPH sustained winds and pounding 20 foot waves. The Airstream was rocking and I was rethinking the tilting up of my solar panels. Thankfully, during installation Vinnie convinced me to rivet the panel feet to the roof so all is well. Besides having to close my exhaust vents for water ingress I was "snug as a bug in a rug" @ the Sonoma Coast State Beach with the constant undulating sound of the surf punctuated from time to time with the sound of heavy rain on aluminum. - Brad
