Pull out bed '58 FC

I have a pull out bed in my '58 Flying Cloud that is not very user friendly, so I am trying to make some much needed improvements. The mattress on the side slides out to form a queen size bed and the front mattress is stationary. the whole layout is "L" shaped. When I bought mine 18 years ago it was a "parts in a box" restoration project. The slide out piece slides in slots on the sides and has fold down legs. There is not hardware other than that. There is not limit to how far out it will slide, so keep it from completely falling down on the floor I have 2 pins I place thru the plywood slide out piece into the frame below.

Questions: 1. Anyone out there have the same setup? Any recommended improvements?
2. I would like to replace the 3 piece mattress assembly to a single type that folds into the couch when the lower piece is slid back into a couch. Any suggested mattress, that can fold into the couch and then easily slide out into a bed? Maybe a futon type mattress?

Appreciate any help out there. Other than this issue we love the FC. Perfect unit for travel.

Pics Please

Please post pics of your "L" shaped layout. I can't remember an "L" shaped layout coming out of the factories in 58. After seeing that, we might be able to offer some suggestions.

Here are 2 photos. The side slides out. You can see the 2 fold down legs directly under the wood trim.

Possible Possibilities

Based on your post
Q1. We use to have a similar layout, thus we sold it and went for a vintage with permanent beds. Kind of tired pulling it out at night and making the bed, then putting it back every morning. We began tossing the back rest cushion on the floor on both beds and used them as twins. To keep them from sliding out, on ours there was a block of wood screwed into the pullout wood support that was used as a "Block" so that it prohibited the slides from sliding all the way out. Sorry no pic because the trailer is long gone. You may want to rebuild your slides or purchase some new slides from vintage trailer supply. You could also attached white hard plastic sheeting cut to the size of your slides and attach where the surface meets to reduce friction making it easier to slide out.

Q2. I am not aware of any single type mattress assembly that anyone is using that folds into a couch. It is what it is. Use both as twins if it is only the two of you, by sleeping feet to feet, and attaching your bedding to the wall side of the mattress, and when not in use, rolled tightly and hidden under the back cushion near the wall.

L shaped sliding bed

I made this for my 56 Bubble. It would work well for your Cloud. Modify as you see fit.

How Vintage Gauchos Work

Don't know if this will help, but maybe this will give you some ideas. This is how the gauchos work in our 1966 model.
1The gaucho in the couch position looks much like yours
2. To make the mattress large enough, there is a small bolster (green thing) stowed behind the back rest. It supports the back rest when in couch position and lays down to extend the mattress in bed position.
3. The gaucho cushions have a fabric hinge to keep them together. They also have a 1/4" plywood support inserted into the bottom of the mattress cover.
4. The cushions in bed position.
5. The Walter of Wabash slides are extremely strong. Even though the bed cantilevers into the aisle, it requires no additional supports. Though I made our own slides, they are available from VTS. The slides have stops so that they cannot extend too far.
It's very easy to extend the bed: pull out the base, lay down the bolster, flatten the cushion and that's it. There are no pieces to remove or stow. I don't know if the slides were used in the 50's but I plan to use them in our '55 trailer restoration too since they work so well.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
