I expect there will be lots of Basecamps in Minneapolis. Maybe you could start a Basecamp club!

Guess where I'm going right now!
Someone told me this past Sunday they saw a TV ad, and the week before it was reported that there was a news story about the Airstream 75th Anniversary and the Airstream only park in, I think, Clear Lake MN. Looks like the Airstream marketing department is starting up.
I chose "ABC004" to stands for Airstream BaseCamp #4. The dealer told me that Aveda Corp bought #1, and that a Colorado company had ordered one from them. I don't know if that sale was finalized, but #5 was still on the showroom floor a week ago. (Shorewood RV) I definitely want to make contact with other owners and see our sub-club grow.
I'm new to forums, too, so I ask your patience for pics. Most of mine are large files, and I think I have to work on that.

Thanks, Shari, for setting up the BC forum.
I can tell that my life will henceforth be BBC and ABC (Before, and After BaseCamp.) And happily, so!

You should also be able to add "Base Camp" to your profile that shows up under your name on the left. Go to 'UserCP' and follow the prompts.
Hopefully you won't be alone on here for long ~

Welcome, Betty and BaseCamp! (Will you give it a name soon?) Could that have been you with your BaseCamp that we passed in mid-September going East on I-70 in Western Kansas?? Probably not, but these units surely do catch the eye on the road! Hope we see you sometime in Minnesota, camping! ~G

No, it wasn't me. I just took possession about a week ago since it took awhile to prepare a place for it and find someone to pull it. I had to build a new fence with a big double gate. It's parked in my back yard, looking like an alien ship! I don't think I'll ever get tired looking at it--it was love at first sight!
Regarding a name. Hmmm. Maybe "Barbara" after Barbara Washburn, first woman to summit Denali. Or, Sir Hillary.
What do you all think?

Hi, Betty,
Your BaseCamp is cute, and so are you smiling like that and pointing at the nameplate. I hope that precise feeling follows you, and I think this photo is a keeper. Congratulations.

Cool Basecamp!
Congrats on your adorable trailer!
I had no idea the Basecamp was so tall.... I have only seen photos/images. I agree please post pictures of inside and at a campsite!
Here is a photo of my "vintage basecamp" (actually a 1946 Kit Teardrop)
We took our "vintage basecamp" to our first Forum Rally because our Airstream was disassembled..... but they let us hide in the dark corners.

Yeah. I'm leaning toward Sir Hillary. Why not travel with the first of the best? And my TV could be Tenzeng! But I sure could use some more ideas.

New member - Basecamp
Local dealer in Houston received two last week. They didn't have the loading ramp (motorcycle/atv) or the Kelty tent attachment. One with those accessories should arrive in about 3 weeks...we're hoping so as camping in Texas is best this time of year. As to tow vehicle...I have a 2002 GMC Envoy in-line six cylinder (4.2L) and it's been bullet proof for 75,000 miles. (22 mpg highway driving). I towed a 3900lb open trailer with 600 lb motorcycle from Houston to Florida in August with no problem. I intend to load a Harley Road King Classic (750 lbs) on the Basecamp on occassion (one of the key interests we have in the Basecamp) I like the flexibility and while it's not a condo on wheels, it will suit us just fine, as we historically did tent camping with the kids...and with them off now, this will fit just fine.
Good luck on your TV decision, but there are many options in the market.

What a cool little trailer! How big is the big screen TV in there?
Congratulations, I'm sure you'll have a blast with it.

Gee Betty, I don't know how I've missed this thread. Welcome to the forums -- you have collected a lot of attention on your new baby.
Stick with the Forums -- we love tales of travels, pictures -- but mostly sharing the relationships with fellow Airstream devotees. About February or March, keep an eye out for a thread about the Midwest Forums Rally at Kettle Moraine -- quite a way into Illinois, near Bloomington. But we'd welcome a chance to meet you and your own Edmund --- er, Sir Hillary.
Based on experience of a friend of mine with a 4-cylinder Highlander, I have often been the voice of discouragement on that tow vehicle. I honestly agree with Druupy above that the 6-cylinder should do fine with the Base camp. Guess I've missed if you mentioned whether you have the 4- or 6-cylinder.
Well -- freezing weather tonight with a chance of rain and slush. These forums keep us alive through the winter. Good timing!

I have an 04 Camry which the Highlander is roughly based. I have the 4 cylinder-same engine used in Highlander . I would strongly recommend the V6 Highlander for towing. I think you'll do fine with that engine.
The 4 is fine for commuting, but IMO not enough for pulling a 2,500 lb. trailer.

Hi Betty! I love your Basecamp! It's bigger than I thought it would be. I never saw a picture of one with a person standing next to it. You two are made for each other!
I don't think you would be happy towing with a Highlander. If you're sold on Toyota, did you check out the new Toyota FJ Cruiser? What a sweeeet combo that would be with the Basecamp. 5000# towing capacity compared to 3500# for Highland(with tow package)
http://www.toyota.com/fjcruiser/inde...GM_TN_FJ_INDEX
If you want something pre-owned, maybe a 4-Runner would be better. Bigger engine choices and towing capacity.
A suggestion for a name would be "Wanda"....for Wanda Rutkiewicz, the only woman to climb 8 of the 14 worldwide mountains over 8000 meters.
Cheers! Steve

Towing your basecamp
A short list of things you might want to consider as you shop a tow vehicle:
Ask about "tow packages". Pre-wired for brake controller?, Class III receiver hitch, connector to allow for elec. brake function, transmisson cooler. Nice if vehicle has separate fuses for trailer functions.
Vehicle's actual weight vs. trailer's. As light as the Basecamp is even a moderate tow vehicle should weight more.
Will you need other cargo space? Bicycles, small generator, extra water, etc.
Trucks are nice for this.
The Basecamp is 7'-2" at its widest point. Anything over 6 feet becomes an issue for using your side mirrors. Almost any side mirror can be extended with clip-on extensions. Some models have standard or optional extending mirrors.
Better to err on the side of more than less when towing cross-country & mountains.
If you are looking at new or almost new the Toyota Tundra or Nissan Titan are worth looking at.
Good luck & congratulations on your new Airstream.
