New Airstream Model -- Base Camp

Attached below is a photo of a new concept Airstream just introduced at the RVIA Expo in Louisville, KY -- it is called the Base Camp trailer. The trailer was designed in conjunction with Nissan Design America. The product is due to launch the summer of 2004.

I haven't seen the floorplan yet so don't know what the interior layout is like nor do I know the length. Did anyone happen to go to the show and get more info on this new Airstream toy?

From a Nov. 24 Airstream press release:

"Blending the convenience of RV travel with the versatility of car camping, Airstream has partnered with Nissan Design America and Kelty to create the Base Camp, a microlight tent-trailer hybrid. Created for a new generation of campers, this unique product innovation provides a first-in-market tent feature developed by Kelty, attached to a striking new trailer design as only Airstream and Nissan Design America could develop. "The Shape of Things To Come," the Base Camp will be built as an authentic Airstream, but will be marketed at a lower price, offering a new range of consumers the ability to participate in the Airstream way of life and to See More, Do More, Live More."

The world's most expensive tent.

Me Likey!

I have heard of this model coming out but the first I have seen.
AS is also working with BMW as well as Nissan.

I have always wanted to build my own teardrop for fun but this steps things up a notch.

I dont think the long timers of the WBCCI membership will be as recepticve but I hope it will bring a younger career genration to the WBCCI and boost the membership numbers.

As I have always said, all things evolve and it has taken AS a little longer than most but ya gotta keep up with the times for continued success.

If nothing else, this is a way to get career generation folks into Airstreaming and they too will evolve to larger Airstreams. Heck, lookat me. a 27 footer only a year ago and now I am in a 34'

Horse trailer? Dog trailer?

I don't know about you, but one look at that took me straight back to 1978, and...

My first impression of the trailer was that it looked like a towable toilet.

It would look just right being towed behind one of the new Nissan or Infiniti Sport Utes, but I guess that is a no brainer.

This is my answer to a tear drop, before I got the AS. This is biult out of an air dam from a diesil truck. I put 11000 miles on this combination last year. I got an average of 30 miles to the gallon at Highway speeds. Mac

What do you suppose the cost of replacing that wrap-around window would be?

Two people can sleep laid flat side by side. With the lid up you can comfortably sit on the rear and make coffe or read in the rain and stay dry. But no insulation so its only for good weather. Mac

Its about 15' I think, and will most likely have the base anmenities. IE: stove top, couch/bed. The rear will open and can possibly be used as a storage area for a 4 wheeler or dirt bike... or possible an extenable tent? Sleeping up front. Its more geared for the recreational tent camper that would like a trailer but not pay the $$$ for a fully loaded travel trailer and not have a truck to load a 4 wheeler or other camping gear for short weekend trips...

Pretty impressive design and looks a lot sharper in person. I am sure there will be alot more buzz in the near future on this one.

Here it is!

Spent all week at the Louisville RVIA show. Here's a pic of the Base Camp. It looks pretty darn cool in person. This was purely a concept, the rear clamshell doors (in the tent) were taped shut so I assume there was probably no interior.

They had some boards around it touting the camper, climber, mountain biker lifestyle.

Oh...and then there was this

This thing got a lot of laughs....Chinook builds this massive off road class B/C. This year, I assume with their tongue in their cheek, they built this CHUMMER (Chinook + Hummer).

Certainly an attention getter. It even had CHUMMER in the grill like a real HUMMER.
