BC-20-X Bed Mod

Hey folks, new member here. Thought I'd share my king bed mod, largely inspired by others. (It's a long post. Sorry)

We always keep the bed in king mode, but we had several issues with the factory design. The biggest:
1. No access to storage without tearing down 2/3rds of the bed
2. Support posts and pedestals under the bed limited space and made access difficult

Here's what we were looking for:
• Easily removable
• Can be stored in roadside rear storage
• Access either storage compartment by removing only one cushion
• Increase under bed center storage
• Make under bed center storage more accessible
• OEM setups (twin, couch, work station etc.) can still be configured as designed
• Lightweight

Basically I just added four D-rings (OEM) above the existing ones to support the vertical aluminum tubing. Then connected the vertical and horizontal tubing with the 3-Way Corner Connectors. The tubing and connectors are not glued or screwed so it is easy to disassemble.

I did add a block (PVC board) to the rear on each side for extra support. My initial plan was to use two pieces of plywood instead of the shelves. The shelves makes storage far easier, but the rear one was a bit tipsy.

Also (not pictured): I drilled a hole in the forward shelving pice all the way through the aluminum bar and dropped a pin in it to keep the shelves from sliding forward.

Cleaver!

I keep bed always "up". No patience to tear down and set up every day.
Now your solution would allow total usage of the space under the bed to store clothing, gear, etc is larger boxes because the "table" posts are not blocking or limiting the width of plastic bins.

Hmmmm

How did this mod hold up? I think I might do this to my Basecamp. Do you still use the mod?

It works great!.

I've made a few enhancements over the years.

• Added an additional "D" ring/vertical post set in the center

• Used strong/stiff bungees to keep the 'D" rings firmly against the posts (Photo 1)

• A board between the rear posts and the rear storage compartment. This keeps stuff in the rear from sliding forward under the bed. It's not fastened in, just sits between the rear posts and the rear storage. (Photo 2)

- Added some slats longways (Photo 2) Looks like the one on the left has moved a little.

• Removed the never used table tops

I'd re-photo the frame without the mattress, but we're on the road.

Very nice improvements. Did you need to cut the vertical aluminum tubes down a little to accommodate for the slats raising the shelf's? Speaking of the slats, how thick are they?
Question, in your first post you mentioned that you added PVC blocks? Can you post a picture or help me understand where you put those? Appreciate it.
I started to buy the supplies for this project. I will post some pics in the coming weeks when I get to installing everything.

Sorry for the delayed response. We're on the road and have had to do alot of "site hopping"

- I don't think so, but you could. I just wanted to be sure i could fully open the the existing compartment lids/bed platform all the way

Speaking of the slats, how thick are they?
- They are 1"x3" PVC trim boards

Question, in your first post you mentioned that you added PVC blocks?
-The slats probably made the blocks moot. Attached photo

I realized I failed to mention: I cut Dados on the slats where they intersect with the aluminum rails.
