Anyone found a nice license plate cover?

So the mounting brackets on the Basecamp are for a standard size 12"x6" license plate...

The Montana RV/Trailer plate is motorcycle size 7"x4".
Hard to believe that most of the available adapter brackets that reduce from standard to the 7"x4" look terrible.
Anyone find a good solution?

I don't have an answer but definitely interested in finding one. Our Globetrotter is due in next February and will also be licensed in Montana so will be addressing the same issue. I'll be interested in any feedback.

I wonder if you could do something with an aluminum sheet. Maybe a local metal working shop could make something creative that looks good.

Interesting problem to solve.... How about using a thick plastic or metal car-sized plate blank (imagine something like this: "American Patriotic Allegiance Personalized Plate Frame") that you simply drill four mounting holes into the mount the motorcycle-sized plate on? The holes in the larger blank would allow you to mount it to the trailer. You could use the silver or black background, or the grayscale flag as a background. It might work....

Or someone else might come up with a good engineering solution. The only other plate adapters that I saw have rows of grooves and holes that are really ugly looking. I'll keep an eye out for some other technical solution.

Hmmm... how about just a mounting bar that mounts in the top two screw holes for the automotive plate, but allows you to screw in nuts and bolts to mount the motorcycle-sized plate to it? Something like this flip-up bracket: "Flip-up license plate holder" could allow you to drill a couple of holes to mount the motorcycle-sized plate in the middle of it, but hold it very securely to the car-sized plate mounting screw bosses on the trailer.

Good luck,
Scott

License Plate Adapter

I had a similar problem years ago. I bought a piece of Black Plexiglass, Cut it to standard license plate size with standard mounting holes as well as motorcycle plate holes. Mount the small plate on the plexiglass then mount the plexiglass to the trailer. I use nylon Nuts and bolts on both. Don't want to contribute to corrosion.

I have seen the single license plate bar, and I have considered this option.
Its basically a bar across the top of the plate that would mount to only the top mounting holes on the trailer. Then you attach your smaller plate to that leaving the bottom of the plate hanging free in the air.
I prefer to NOT use this option as I would like the plate to be 4 point affixed and not being able to vibrate or move, this could possibly (although unlikely) damage the trailer from the bottom of the plate.
So still looking for any other options that don't require custom construction.
Thanks for the thoughts and replies everyone!

I have 5 or 6 utility and boat trailers registered in Montana with the small plate but when I registered the Basecamp in 2019 Flathead county sent a full sized permanent plate.

They are nice, unfortunately wont do the job of adapting from standard size plate to motorcycle size plate. May be a good chance the Denver Water Jet place could custom make one though.

Where I live ..you can have custom plate frames made..as we have a number of sheet metal facilities..

I would call these people...have them make you a custom plate...sounds good

Just to follow up on this...
I eventually found the perfect solution, first of all I just contacted Montana and got the full size license plate.
Then I found a simple rubber plate cover that will prevent the plate from banging or scratching on the trailer...

Done
