Tire Recommendation Please

In March of 2016 I upgraded the 15" factory wheels on my 28' FC with Michelin LTXs (225x75Rx16) and 16" Sendels. The date code corresponds closely with the install date (3/30/2016) which makes the "new looking tires" marginal for the planned trip to Utah in September.

I heard the Goodyear Endurance tires were the answer but I don't see where they come in a 16" size.

Help and recommendations would be much appreciated.

Why not another set of Michelins?

If you have 16" rims then you are best to stick with an LT tire. Michelin Defender and LTX are the go-to tires for your rims, generally speaking.

Goodyear endurance are 15"....

Does anyone have any experience with the Bridgestone Dueler LX? My local Discount Tire said they were good LT type tires good for my 2016 28' FC with 16" wheels. I couldn't find the Dueler LX in the Bridgestone web line up of tires and possibly they may have a deal with Discount. Please tell me I haven't made a mistake. I'm pretty good at that.

I'm kinda of the belief, if you're camping in as Airstream that's less than five years old, trying to save a few dollars on tires is not the way to go. If you take the additional cost of the Michelins over a five year life span, you're really just saving pennies on the dollar, but that's me. Plus like the old TV ad said, "You can pay me now, or Pay me later.

To save cash but not compromise performance go back to 15” rims and pair those up with goodyear endurance tires.

Discount Tire Direct has them for about $190 each. That price has a $100 rebate built into a set of 4. That's for the Michelin Agilis Cross Climate. 225 75 R16. Free shipping and dependent upon your location, might also be free of sales tax.

I buy from the Internet because I can't get a tire dealer in the St. Louis area to mount an LT tire on my Airstream. Unless the Internet seller has a physical presence in the state, it's also tax free. I typically take the wheels to a dealer who has mounting agreements with the Internet seller. Even with those agreements the retail tire dealer in St. Louis will only mount ST tires on trailers. Our sales taxes are out of sight and dependent upon the location of the retailer in town, average sales tax is 8-10% Mounting and balancing agreements with the Internet retailers are about $13-$17 at our local tire shops.

FWIW I attended the Michelin Tire presentation at the international rally. As stated Michelin does not make a 15" LT tire any longer. The said they are not aware of any plans to do so but they are not the corporate people who make such decisions.

I then asked their thoughts on the GYE tires and they said they are good tires!

It was a good presentation with lots of discussion on tire pressure!

I just had a GY (1917 date code) blow on my 2018 TB19CB. Was cruising from St George UT to Vegas 100° and about 63 mph. Didn't feel it until the tread left the tire. Just a slight bump, no sway o... and, right at an offramp, just in cell service range. Although 3 dropped calls trying to get AAA.

Have decided to go 16". Still trying to locate wheels. May have to go with the Sendel T03BM due to availability.

For tires, I'm planning on the Michlein Agilis Crossclimate C-metric 225/75R16C.

My TB19CB gross is 5000 lbs and the C-metric is rated 3085lbs@80psi, 2435lbs@60psi and max 3195lbs@83psi. The Agilis Crossclimate 225/75R16 LRE is rated 2680@80psi, 2440@70psi and max 2680@90psi.

With my single axel and 5000lb gross, it just seems safer to go with the C-metric and have the additional load capacity as a safety factor and possibly safety margin for rough roads and potholes.

I would go for at LEAST a D rated tire, preferably, an E rated tire for a single axle. BSTS.

You didn't say which GY blew out; Marathon or Endurance? The GY Endurance are holding up extremely well here on the Forum....I am on my second set with my 28' with no issues. The Marathons were the problem and Micheline no longer makes a 15" LT rated tire; thus the move by many who want that tire, to 16" wheels. Personally, I have run both and find the Endurance ST in 15" to be very nice to my AS. No need to go up to the 16" wheel just for the 16" Michelin LT rated tire, IMHO...

Which ever you decide, make sure you have the stiffer sidewalls of the ST or LT rated tires..the passenger rated tire sidewalls can give you a "swaying" feel while towing...I made that mistake putting a P rated Micheline 15" LTX on my 25' few years back...thinking it was an LT rated tire...the sway was very noticeable.

You have a 2018 Bambi, the tire that blew out was 4 years old... you're still on the original tires... weren't they Marathons? First thing I did when I got my Airstream home, I got rid of the Marathons... the Endurance is a better tire, but, having a single-axle trailer, I'm trading out tires every three years. I would not run a C on a Bambi.

Was there any other damage that occurred?

This, exactly. This is a purchase that you only make every 5-6 years. For the sake of safety and peace of mind, saving a few bucks on a set of tires is not worth it.

I may be mistaken, but I think the LTX Michelin is actually a P-rated tire, as in Passenger. The full model number is LTX P-225/75R16X. The X is the load rating and can be used to tell you what the ply rating and max pressure is. To use it on a truck you must divide the weight rating by 1.11. While they don't specify what to do for a trailer, the safe money is treat it the same as a truck.

I have a feeling the OP changed from 15" wheels and tires to Michelin LT 225/75 R16 (not LTX) back in 2016. A lot of us made that switch as the 15" Goodyear Marathon ST tires where having a lot of problems back then.

I did the upgrade in 2014 or 2015 (to the LT 225/75-16 In the market for replacements right now.

Hi

The LT 225/75 R16's are what AS was putting on Classics starting in or before 2016. I'm in the same boat with my trailer also looking for something that will fit.

In my case (and possibly on earlier trailers) it pretty much needs to be the same 225/75 in order to make it inside the wheel well and to have enough space between the two tires.

So far Michelin is the only one I've found that has tires with enough of a load rating on them. That doesn't make them the right choice if there *is* something else out there.

So multiple folks are shopping for "the answer" .....
