impulsive purchase

Okay so YES, I probably should have come here first to ask this question, but I didn't! I purchased this 2016 23' Flying Cloud, I wanted a good quality reliable trailer and came across this and was impulsive.

http://surmotorcars.com/salvage-wrec...-5a345547263be

for $8650 plus about $500 in fees and $1300 to haul it to a friend a few states away for repair. I will go pick it up myself when it is finished, he has a vintage trailer repair business. I saw another thread where someone else bought an airstream with damage and everyone told him to run, and the OP didn't ever come back and say whether he did, or did not.

Thoughts? Am I nuts? Does a salvage title on a trailer spell doom for me?

Does anyone want to venture a guess of cost and time involved?

Thank you!

That thing rolled. It is going to be a nightmare to fix ‘IF” it can even be fixed. Shell is not good. Looks like it’s leaning to the street side. I think you def paid to much for it. Looks like maybe 3500-4000 worth of headache. Cost to repair will be based on what you deem useable. My thoughts is that this trailer is going to be hard to make it functional to a level that you buy an Airstream for.

The link says it hasn't been purchased yet. True?

Rolled? Sure looks like it, which means a lot of hidden problems.

Paid too much? Probably, BUT your Ace in the Hole ... Vintage repair friend? Would be more than a good idea to pay the friend to come look at it for an evaluation and cost estimate. You might just be lucky.

Just sayin'

Everything is "repairable". but at what price? If you come out the other end of this with 25k invested in the trailer all in did you save enough $$ to deal with the potential issues?

What would a perfect condition one have cost? Do you have the CASH to pay out of pocket, no bank is going to loan on a salvage.

Make sure who ever does the repair knows what they are doing. Its not just replacing the panels, butt straightening the frame and body.

Best of luck.

When we were shopping we found a great Ocean Breeze edition trailer, couple years old. Had a dent in the roof were someone sat/stepped on the corner of it. We almost bought it. Then I realized if I looked at a 40k car and it had a B.A.D (big A#% dent) in it no way I would have thought to by it. You sir are a brave man.

We're all nuts.

At least they showed the damage that was visible. Many sellers wouldn't. You are in ti now, and you'll find a way to make the best of it.

It will no doubt take a lot of disassembly, repairs and replacements to the shell, and some fairly expensive replacement body parts.

The upside is that it is a fairly new Airstream and the parts should be available. Be patient and work carefully.

Ditto.

Have your friend come look at it first IMO, and give you a firm estimate of the cost of repair. I would also send photos to Airstream hdqrtr. at Jackson Center, and ask their advice.

Good luck,

Peter

PS -- This phrase in your OP catches my eye:

Are you sure you are willing to pay for this? You could probably find an existing used AS right now, for a comparable or lower cost compared to your final actual cost a year or more from now.

IMO

I only count six good panels. You would need to have another good trailer to utilize the interior parts.

If you did purchase this AS I would cancel the deal. There are plenty of used trailers out there.

That trailer looks like after many hours of good work it would still not be right. I would walk away.

Don't ever buy anything on impulse?

You will probablyly never be able to sell it for anything near what it's going to cost you to fix it.

Too much money and way too much time. That shell is seriously bent in ways you can't imagine. Any replacement panel you buy will never line up.
Good luck but I think you bit off more than you know. I seriously doubt you could even break even parting this trailer out; not to mention, it would take years.

Cheers
Sidekick Tony

PS; thinking about this some more and here's what I would do. I would aproach Airstream to rebody the trailer with a completely new shell. I would strip all the parts off and the shell from the frame and deliver the frame to Airstream to just put a new shell with wiring, insulation and interior walls, that's it. I don't know how much they will charge you, but it won't be cheap.

Didn’t want to comment till I looked at the sellers website and saw you had a $1000 deposit but hadn’t taken possession. As an old car collector who has restored a half dozen or so, I can’t overstate the suggestion you treat the down payment as an education and walk away. There is so much wrong here that it’s hard to figure out what is worse, the lopsided body or the damaged panels. I learned the walk away lesson the hard way and I keep the script from a 57 Ford to remind me.
