Door latch broke, after it was closed!

Last weekend I was camping with my 1986 26' Sovereign, and stepped inside my trailer closing the door behind me, and the door latch simply went loose. The handle will move but it is not connected with the actual latch it seems. After a moment of panic, i figured out I could get out the back window, and did, expecting to come around and open the door from the outside latch, but it did the same, moved in the normal fashion but it seemed to be connected to nothing. i spent the remainder of the trip going in and out the back window, which got some strange glances form the rest of the park. I tried to remove the latch, but it only has screws on the inside (none outside) and it will not come out; I imagine there are screws on the jamb side as well, but I can't open the door so I can't get to those. Any ideas???

The same thing happened to me. Not pretty, but took a brake adjuster tool and pried between thr door and jamb very carefully. The door popped with no damage. Sal.

Thanks, that is a good idea! I am out of town this week again, this time without the trailer, but I will try that when I get back!

Thanks!
