Colaws Inventory / Junk Yard info 7/19/04

Remembered to take my camera this time. I tried to take an exterior picture of any Airstreams that still had windows, or any exterior salvageable parts. There are a TON of pics, so keep checking while I download them.

Another successful trip for me. Lots of window locks, ($10 each) a new fridge, light switches, and mirror brackets.

Unfortunately I was not able to accomodate any requests from those of you who called me. Just couldn't find what ya needed...and what I did finally found was bent beyond belief.

I hope these pics are helpfull....If you see anything that you might need, call colaws, and ask for

Hope this is helpfull to you all.

It's Excella HEAVEN here... I would say 2/3 to Half of the airstreams there are Excella's....Makes me afraid that they aren't as stable as the rest....????Hmmm..

I think it is awesome that you took the time to take pictures~!! Being 500 miles or better from colaws, it is a treat to see an A/S jink yard. I think I'll do the same a Camper World near Birmingham AL next month.

The last photo in post # 8, the remains on the left have an interesting history. It was a brand new 34' slide out that was rolled so close to the factory that the tires' paper labels were still on the treads.

The slide out was purchased by an RV dealer who had a couple of damaged Airstreams. Last I heard, he was still trying to locate someone who would engineer and install the slide in an 80-something 28' unit.

I got the shocks. Interestingly, one of them was absolutely dead - no valving action at all, even though brand new.

Oh, and it still has perfect rear curtain, which can just be made out in the back. The wheels were sold long ago, and I thought the axles were as well, but looks like they are still there. Three axles with less than 100 miles on them.

I saw a class A over there one time that had been t-boned by a semi. The semi hit just behind the passenger's seat, and the impact made a large, square hole on the curb side. The impact caused the slide out on the other side to pop clear of the vehicle - and it was gone missing in action. The effect, viewed from the side, was as if the semi had passed completely through.

Speaking of SOB's, one should not forget that a lot of stuff we use is used by other makers as well. Stoves, refrigerators, generators, furnaces, water heaters, etc., etc. Colaw's gets a lot of this stuff in near new condition, as RVers have a tendency to total out in the first months of ownership. Sad, but true.

But one should always understand "caveat emptor" when dealing in salvage.

Do they have an inventory of wrecked AS as well? If so where are they? Birmingham is only 200 miles or so from me. May take a ride to look for some parts if they have a good stock.

Any info Appreciated.

Every one of those was somebody's pride n' joy - it's heartbreaking! But I think I see a few parts I could use. I should give them a call.

Notice that second picture has a very low WBCCI number on the front. Probably an officer's trailer. In fact several of them were in the club. I'll bet the reason there's more big excellas there than Bambis is that they are used by fulltimers and caravanners, and unfortunately the more time you spend on the road, the more likely something will happen - Bambi's tend to go out for shorter trips. Also, I'll bet if things get out of control with a 30+ footer, they get REALLY out of control.

Drive carefully, everybody!

If this forum had background noises, then this one would have the sound of crushing metal! Yiy!

Love 031's "Always Open" window! I suppose it wasn't ever intended to mean that there's just no way to shut it closed...

Great pics--and looks like a fantastic day!

There's a great red glittered vinyl wrap around diner style couch in that one...it used to be a radio stations traveling diner.... I would love to buy that couch... But I don't have room....

OK, look PAST the bird Doo Doo...it's in excellent condition.
