Downgraded Cargo Capacity

Did Airstream downgrade the cargo carrying capacity (CCC) of the Safari 23? We went through this in November of 2006 http://www.airforums.com/forums/f396/cargo-carrying-capacity-ccc-23-safari-se-ls-27795.html and during the discussion Airstream upped the capacity to 6000 lbs. They even sent me a new sticker with the 6000 lbs. CCC to paste over the one in my trailer that said 5600 lbs.

I was reading a new thread today http://www.airforums.com/forums/f396/new-safari-advice-32986.html where Mike (the thread starter) stated the CCC as 5600 lbs. I checked the Airstream.com site and sure enough, it says 5600 lbs. again. What gives?

Hi Randy -- Was the sticker they sent you for the inside of your closet door? Did the new sticker match the capacity for the riveted metal plate on the outside of the trailer (which is located roadside front on my '06)? That would be interesting to know.

If I recall correctly... Henschen supplied a bunch of axles early in 2005 that didn't have proper wheel bearing lubrication. There were a number of dramatic bearing failures and Airstream switched to Dexters before mid-summer (including my August '05 produced Safari). The Dexter axles did have higher capacities. I thought Airstream switched back after a year but 2air' corrected me last year that Airstream did persist with Dexters due to Canadian certification requirements that Henschens did not meet. Perhaps one of our dealer members would know more but I believe you can trust the highest provided figure for your coach. Would other production periods differ? I don't have specific details...

You could crawl under your Safari and look for labels on the axles. Pictures and data would go a long way toward increasing broader understanding.

Bob,

The sitcker was for the inside of the closet door. I seem to recall the riveted plate saying 6000 lbs also. I have a photo of it that I can check later today.

I'm still wondering why Airstream.com has the 23 at 5600 lbs now. That was a deal breaker for Orangekid, who needed the extra capacity, and who ordered his 23 after Airstream upped the GVWR.

Randy,

Just checked with the dealer here and he confirmed GVWR at 6000lbs as you have said. Might be a bit too much for me to pull with my new Toyota. Probably be ok on flat land, but get me back out in Colorado heading west and I might bog down too much.

Got a line on a couple of 20 footers to look at in a couple of weeks. Too bad they arent closer.

Mike,

The GVWR is the limit of what you can load it up to. I think the 23 dry weighs around 4500 lbs. If you're careful and managed the weight you could be okay, but I would hate for you to be uncomfortable with your setup.

The 20 has a nice floor plan and should accommodate your needs. Good luck.

ID Plate on 2007 Safari 23'

Here's the ID plate on my 23. It does say 6000 lbs. Wonder why it's only 5600 on Airstream.com today.
