Vinyl wallpaper stripper

I searched, but couldn’t come up with anything recent. I’m on mobile, so that could have something to do with not finding what I’m looking for.

I’m in the middle of stripping the vinyl off the interior skins of my ‘79 31’ Sovereign.

This is a bear, and I have about 100 linear feet of skins left to do!

First stage is using Jasco Premium Paint & Epoxy Remover. This is requiring two coats about 30-45 minutes apart to get the vinyl to lift.

Is Klean Strip Premium Stripper any better, or is there a better “order only” product to speed up the first phase of this process?

I know the Jasco formula changed a few years ago.

Be careful using some of those heavy-duty strippers in an enclosed space, different ones can have all sorts of stuff in them. Great for stripping paint and other stuff in a well-ventilated shop but check the label for indoor use.

Back in my contracting days, my painter used a steamer to remove wallpaper. It was still tedious, but it worked well. You can rent them.

I should say that was for wallpaper in a house glued to drywall. Not sure what they used to glue up wallpaper to aluminum back in the '70s.

I’m not too concerned with toxicity. All of the panels are removed and I can lay them out and do this outdoors with proper PPE.

I wouldn’t want to tackle this job inside!

Has anyone tried to use a sander to remove the wallpaper, if so... did it scuff up the aluminum and make it easier/harder to paint?

It isn't wallpaper, it is plastic that is bonded to the aluminum. I gave it a brief attempt to remove it with the nastiest paint remover in my arsenal, and decided to replace all the interior aluminum instead. I have seen trailers where the owners said they removed the vinyl, but I wouldn't pursue it...

good luck!
