Twin Bedroom Convertible to Super King

Added a modification to my 27FB Twin setup. I weekend camp and often have various friends, family, or just the wife and I. Wanted to flexibility to convert the bedroom for different situations.

Enter the convertible Super King 96" x 80" bedroom. Absolutely palatial in size and could comfortably sleep a family of 4 with smaller kids. Easily converts in a couple minutes.



Premise is straightforward.
1) Create a quick release system for center nightstand allowing it to be easily pulled off without tools. I put a few brackets with thumbscrews that secure it down onto it's base.
2) Built some 5/8" planks that are under a twin, that can be pulled across to span the twin bed walkway space.
3) Bought an extra matching foam mattress to create two tightly fitting 36"x20" that can be dropped in place. The bed feels continuous with good support even between the gaps.

Great innovation! Whenever I get to the point of reinstalling the beds, I have been thinking of changing the twin rear beds into a queen, but this flexibility and ability to keep the under bed storage is even better. Thanks for sharing!

Love it! I wonder if adapting one of the Liftco Swing Galley brackets like they use on pop-up campers would take the removable upper nightstand concept a step further.

What did you do with the USB charging ports on each side of the nightstand? Or did yours not have them?

My '07 doesn't have them but they wouldn't be hard to reconfigure. USB charge ports are just 2 wires per port coming from underneath the cabinetry. Lots of available products on Amazon to rework it.

Thanks for your post and the great photos. This is exactly the guidance I have been looking for. If you don’t mind, I have several questions for you, I have a 2020 Classic with twins and would like to do the same. Would you please provide more detail (possibly a photo) about how you have secured the nightstand and made it removable with brackets and thumbscrews. Do you travel with the king bed in position, and if so do you have a way to secure the nightstand to the floor? Also, the plywood sheets you are pulling across to support the center filler mattress, is that 3/8” or actually 5/8” thick. Can you “feel” the plywood support system through the mattress’s? Did you have the filler mattress’s custom made by the same company who makes the mattress’s for Airstream? Where do you typically store the filler mattresses when not in use? Thanks in advance!

Sure. There's lots of ways to do each of these things but here's what I did, with a focus on keeping things simple (KISS).

1) Drawer release - thumbscrew, angle bracket, and threaded inserts

2) I've traveled in both configurations, and will just leave the drawer sitting on the floor with a floor mat underneath to keep it from sliding

3) Plywood is a quality 5/8" as any thinner will likely not have enough structure.

4) Can't feel a thing through my particular foam mattress, other than very even, comfortable, and continuous support.

5) I leave the fillers at the foot of the beds as the 27FB has a good gap there.

6) Any 5 or 6" foam mattress from Amazon (I can't find the vender I used anymore) could be tailored to work. I used 3x Twin XLs. Cut the corners using an electric carving knife and it cuts like butter. A little sewing skills to reclose the mattress covers.

Thanks for sharing. I am in the middle of figuring out how to modify our twin bed unit to allow us to have the flexibility to sleep together or have the floor space as wanted. This solution is great! I am thinking the two sections of mattress might fit at the end of the bed in our 27 foot FC.

Hi, I know this is a few years but it's such an inspiration. I am curious, since you mentioned it's 96" wide bed, does this mean your twin XL are 38" wide each? Our 2022 International 27 twin factory is 34" wide beds so wondering if you got custom 38" twins and also expanded the twin platform on each side to support that. Thanks!
