These really great looking new roll down shades !

Hi all, I've googled 'till my eyes are crossed and thought maybe one of you knows...was at an Airstream Dealer today and in the new designer Bambi they had these really cool roll down aluminum shades made by "Ocean-Air' and I want some for my classic. The parts guy said they only come in three dimensions but I know there must be more like them...any ideas...? Thanks, A.

Google worked for me and I found what I think are the shades you are looking for (www.ahoycaptain.com/shop/oceanair_ps.html). You may not like the price.

Sorry, that link is where the shades are located but it will not get you there when you click directly on it. The lead-in page (Oceanair Shades & Screens at AhoyCaptain.com) seems to work. I will try after this is posted and see. If it does work, click on "OceanAir Portlight Shade" to get to the shades.

We saw the OceanAir shades on a new International CCD at the WBCCI International a few weeks ago. We had seen them two months ago in the nice Airstream Life article about a designing couple who rehabbed an Airstream and put "cassette blinds" in. Pricey? Think $70-110 each. But, your house only has a few windows if you live in the Airstream. Redecorating is more affordable on this scale. . . No, we don't have any but we sure like how they look.

Very Nice!!

Thanks for sharing this. I need something for my kitchen window and this might work. I have a polished aluminum backsplash and it looks like this blind will look great with it.

These shades came with our 2008 International. They are rugged and have a minimal footprint. They seem to be a quality product and are pretty slick. They are either up or down--nothing in between that I can figure out, so take that into consideration.

Caryl,
We thought we would want, at least at the dinette and a pair of other windows, a little "extension cord" to allow sort of half-height catching of the blinds. This would let us block out the sun or just reduce glare sometimes but still get breezes. We thought we could duplicate the little funnel pull thing at the end and a catch at the other to give 10-15 inches extension to the string?

Pull Down Shades

I priced the cool looking shades at my local AS dealer and I was shocked at the price of quality. I can't afford the $110-$130 price per shade. I'll continue looking.

There is an inherent problem with roll up shades, day night shades and venetian blinds.

They all hang or are held in place in a straight line, against the inside of an Airstream, which is curved.

They also require a valance at the top.

Therefore when they are down, from the outside at night, you can look right in at each end of the window.

The problem is solved, "IF" you install end panels with the shades or blinds.

Blinds cause another problem for end panels.

Since the blinds will move when the trailer is in motion, the ends of the blinds will cut holes in the end panels.

Bottom line is overall, drapes are hard to beat.

Andy

Actually for the time being, I found some perfect width roll downs at Bed Bath & Beyond, pulled out the wooden base and cut them to fit lengtwise, then sewed the pocket for the wood bottom and hung them. I applied snaps to each side toward the bottom to solve the peeking thru the curve issue. Works great for now, I just wanted something cool and in small windows the curve isn't an issue. I don't think that Ocean-Air's prices are expensive for what you are getting, all the custom ones are made in the UK.

If anybody's looking for a brushed aluminum blind, I bought mine here.

Mini Blinds & Mini Blind Designs at Shades, Shutters, and Blinds

A great price of about $33 bucks.

New Window Treatments in whole house

While we were at Jackson Center we asked about sizes for the Oceanaire cassette shades. They have a window diagram ready for all the recent airstreams (our 2005 is same as 2008, apparently). We were pleasantly surprised by their prices for these, they were at least 1/3 less than yacht supply stores. Took a couple hours to install and we're loving them. We don't have the problem Andy mentioned about the gap -- most of our windows the blind will neatly tuck against the window lift, just like it did with the original roller shades.

Yeah, they're expensive. If they last it'll be worth it. We use them every day, they look much much better than the original roller shades, and work well. The original roller shades work just as well, too. (how's this for balanced perspective?)

Where's the pictures Jim? I, for one, would like to see the quality and fit of these blinds.

Where's the pictures?

Hi Brad,
The pictures are on the way. The only ones I have are from Perry GA vendor show in one of their new Airstream Internationals or Sports. I'll get a few tomorrow from my trailer and post them asap. Thanks for asking!

I have just installed roll down blinds from Ikea in my 64 Globetrotter.
Enje

To keep them flush against the wall, I used Ikea hooks at the bottom of the blind. I will publish pics soon. They were reasonble in price ($40) and work like a charm. No valance needed!

I have also used Roman shades with good results, but found that dealing with the folds was problematic. It was just too good a dust catcher. I like the clean lines and the general ease of care of the rollups.

Red face Slacker

I'm such a slacker! We are emptying our house to close and move out, prepping our 25 a little more, and learning to enjoy retirement. I will picture the OCEANaire shades tomorrow (Wednesday 11/28) and picture them here posthaste thereafter.

Thanks for not beating us up on this -- you are great people!

Roll ups

Jim, Since you are closing up the house I will assume the A/S becomes Home for a while! What did you do with the original shades from your 2005? I would be interested in them if you want to get rid of them. PM me and let me know what sizes you have and what you want for them. Happy Trails, Ed
