Pleated Day/Night Blinds

The strings on the pleated day/night blinds in my '94 LY have worn and in some cases the blinds are not able to slide. Does anyone have any instructions on how to restring these blinds. From what I have read, there are some "clutches" that hold the blind in position, and these may also be broken. I can't seem to find clear instructions on the web on how to do this.

I would suggest contacting the manufacturer. If you were to take one of the blinds down the manufacturer should have their name on the inside of the head-rail. Good luck to you.

I've done lots of these. It is not a hard process but it is a little painstaking. E-mail at lew@gorge.net as I have a few questions about how they are assembled and I can then advise you how to restring them

I just ordered new string and the plastic buttons from United shade in Elkhart, In 1-219-262-0954. Thats the name and number on the shades, I think the area code has changed and I found new area code at web site. They e-mailed instructions and a diagram. My shades were from a 1997 Airstream. The buttone on mine are brittle and breaking.

More info re: manufacturer

I finally got my rig back from the AS dealer (various exterior items needed attention, one of which was that the screws that fasten the exterior walls were starting to work loose). SO I was able to see the label on the blinds -- it says "Pleated Shades by EDI - Elkhart IN, Anaheim CA"

A Google search came up with a coment on a forum as follows:
"EDI day night shades are mfgd in Elkhart, Indiana. Your dealer should have the phone number and address. I was at the factory last year to have some repair work. Try United Shade, Elkhart, Indiana at 219-262-0954."

I'll be calling United Shades tomorrow.

Thanks for all the info you've all provided to date.

Another complication - 3 string shades

I called the folks at United Shades. They told me that EDI went out of business, but they probably could help me. Then came the complication - - United Shades makes their day/night pleated shades with either 2 strings or 4 strings. The EDI ones I have are 3 string - and United Shades said that they don't have any instructions on how to re-string those with 3 strings (i.e., there are 3 strings running through the "rat holes" in the pleated shade).

I also noticed that I have 2 strings in tandem coming down on each side, and they are tied off at the bottoms to the plastic "button".

Has anyone restrung an EDI day/night shade that has 3 strings? If so, can you tell me how it is done?

On the basisi of the information received from United Shades and some info gleaned through Google, I made the plunge and removed the smaller of the 2 pleated shades that needed to be restrung. I bought the string at Walmart and also bought a wool needle (large eye and blunt point). I was able to restring the blind and it is up and working fine. I made a sketch of the route the strings take - here it is for those who may need this info:

Day/nite window shades for '07 Bambi

I'm not wild about the mini-blinds on our Bambi. I like the looks and function of the day/nite shades, but don't know whether I should order them through an AS dealer or from a factory. Also don't know if they can be adapted to the mini-blind frame and hold-downs, or whether drilling and different hardware are req'd. Any info?

Our Interstate came with the day/night shades, which I then ruined 2 1/2 years later trying to clean them. Jackson Center replaced them for us, measured, ordered and installed. Not bargain basement prices, but reasonable, and they are a very neat and tidy way to cover windows in small spaces. We love them.

Plain old sewing bobbins make cheap and effective replacements for the broken buttons.

One of my blinds' strings broke a few days ago. I have new string to restring it, but I have a question or two. The drawing above does not apply to my blinds because of some differences:
1. The night shade (thicker material) is in the top portion of my blind where the drawing shows night on the bottom. And, I only have a single string, not double, at the bottom on each side of the shade.
2. I do not see how to get the blinds loose from the window, no screws. I don't want to tug on them and damage something. How do I get them loose?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Mine are in little brackets at each end.

You can't see them, but they're there, and the shade should pop out.

I see some clips about 8" in from the ends, but none at the ends. I've twisted and pried with a screwdriver, I cannot get them loose. I'll figure that out tomorrow.

Can anyone tell me how to re-string? One side is pulled out so that I cannot tell how it was before.

The blinds with mounting clips have little tabs that interlock with the channel in the top of the frames. They are not really easy to remove unless you have done a few. The right application of force with e blade screw driver usually does the trick. They also might have hidden screws under the upper most fabric slat. These take a bit of digging to see.

I used to restring these quite a bit until it got so expensive and time consuming that I stopped doing it. If I recall correctly (it has been several years at least since my last one), the blinds came in 2 string or 4 string configurations, with the 4-string types being far more complex to restring.

I don't think the diagram is correct, as it shows a single thread in a straight pass-thru to the bottom of the shade. ALL THREADS should be run in a criss-cross pattern.

You also might look into some of the available re-string kits from......ready.......The Blind Man (no kidding). The kit comes with all the thread you need, new retainer ends and bottom mounts and a video.

Good luck!!
