painting over Zolatone

Anyone know if I can use things other than Zolatone? For example do I have to spray or can I paint it myself

I have painted over the Zolotone on my 61 Caravel. I used Bullseye 123 primer and then regular interior latex paint. I just did it in the fall, so I can't say how long it will hold up. I looks great so far. I am sure stripping the Zolotone and respraying would be the best solution. I will probably do that sooner or later - or maybe on my next airstream.

I would imagine if the Zolotone was clean, any type of house paint would adhere to it. May need to use a product called Kilz as a primer.

If the zolotone is still bonted good then clean it to make sure its oil free and any paint should bond well with it. If your down to the aluminum then a epoxy primer and paint. www.westmarine.com sells paints that will bond to the aluminum no problem. Its for hulls on aluminum boats. Had to use some to seal an area where we had some galvanic corrosion.

If you go that route be sure its well ventilated. That stuff does some serious outgassing as it cures.

On ours we are still looking at new Zolotone but for me to apply it I would need several hundred dollars in the correct pressure pot paint gun. I am going to check with the Body shop I know ande see if he has the equipment and what he would charge to do the paint application. Between experiance and the equipment even if he charged a couple hundred more then the equipment costs he would get better finish product. Now I would bring him a empty coach already taped off so it would not require working around cabinetry. He would just need to walk in, paint then I would tow it home to cure.
