Painting over 1978 Argosy wallpaper?

We have one wall left that we did not replace in our 1978 Argosy, (it was the only one not abused by the PO and the vinyl-like wallpaper is intact). Now it does not match the new walls. Dare we paint it with the same paint we put on all of the other walls (which went from bare wood to primer to nice exterior grade latex paint)?? I would appreciate anyones thoughts about this...

Painting over 1978 Argosy wallpaper?

Greetings Kathy!

While I haven't painted over any of my original Vinyl-Clad, I do know that the following is important if you plan to paint over Vinyl-Clad:
  • Thoroughly clean the material to remove all traces of grease, oil, and dirt.
  • Prepare with a primer designed to go over vinyl.
  • Paint with a top coat that is compatible with the primer and deisned for use over a vinyl product.
Good luck with your project!

Kevin

Kevin,
What kind of primer do I need to go over the vinyl?
I have poured over all these posts and it seems that everyone has done everything in the book and all have problems if they take a short cut or who know's why and then there are some that never have problems...
I'm lost.
So what kind of primer should I get to go over the vinyl and also the zolotone?

Painting over 1978 Argosy wallpaper?

Greetings Meredith!

Prior to thoroughly cleaning the vinyl-clad walls in my Minuet, I had considered the possibility of a coat of paint. The original vinyl covering cleaned up beautifully and has been comparatively easy to maintain with a regular recoating with Future Acrylic floor wax. As such, I only have the instructions for painting -- my intent was to consult my local MAB paint store's personnel for their recommendations for primer and top coat.

My Overlander had experienced painting of its original Zolatone at some point in its life so it did require a freshing after I acquired it in 1995. With my coach's already painted over Zolatone, I chose to follow my local MAB retailer's suggestion and utilized an oil-based primer/sealer/surfacer (we knew that the existing paint was oil-based as a touch-up can had been left in the coach by the previous owner). The top coat was a three coat process that was applied utilizing a sponge-painting process to simulate the Zolatone.

Good luck with your project!

Kevin
