Name that finish!

I will be making repairs to some woodwork, replacing some missing panels, etc, and so I am wondering what this finish is. Has anyone else had to match this type of finish? Any tips? I think it is what I've seen refered to as pickled. This is on Bambi.

Although our finish isn't the "light pickled finish" like yours, (ours is a bit darker, but still "pickled") I ran into the same problem. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to match!

Couple of reasons...first the EPA regulations have changed the composition of most lacquers, paints & finishes these days, compared to the 60's. So the chemical composition is not the same...

Secondly, even if you could match it aesthetically today...as it ages it will change whereas the 40+ year old finish has already aged - if it matches now, it probably won't in a couple of years. There is no way to know how it's going to age...is environmental. Even if you had a can of the exact same stuff...the 40+ years of aging vs newly applied would make a difference.

I ended up layering several different stains & tints to acheive a pretty close match, but I know it doesn't quite match and it may get worse over time. Short of refinishing all the cabinets, there's not a sure fire way of getting them all match.

It's tempting to just rebuild, since it's such a small cabinet and the original one is riddled with screw holes from the many fine accessories which have been attached to it over the past 42 years, like so...
