I'm finally ready to start reupholstering our 20 foot minuet. The original cushions on the gaucho and dinette are hinged together with fabric and there are snaps at the top of the seat backs to hold them in place (dinette only). Boxed cushions would look neater, be reversable and easier to construct.
How necessary are the hinges and snaps?
Could I use velcro instead of snaps?

I've just started with the renovation inside of our 29' ambassador. When I saw that the upolstery(sp) for the gaucho was hinged in the fabric, I started thinking about using a lightweight futon materess instead. My experience with getting custom covers made has been that of 'that may cost a little bit extra to do that'. Hope that your remodel goes well
The hinged design is harder to sew but I've tried both ways and the hinge acts as a bridge when in the bed position so you don't feel like you're sleeping on 'the crack'. I say go with the hinge.
The snaps are probably an upgrade and not necessary - at least my gauchos don't have any and as long as I don't run over any curbs they stay up fine !
