Crypton for Upholstry and Curtains?

Hi Folks,

In the process of restoring a 68 Caravel.

After doing some research here and elsewhere I came across Crypton Fabric.

Two questions regarding this fabric

1. Is this a durable and stain resistant product for upholstery in a trailer and well liked?

2. Can this fabric be used for curtains as well?

If there are any other preferred fabrics please make a mention of them as well.

Thanks

Hence their "superfabric" product.

It looks pretty interesting, I'll be following this to see if there is any feedback. I'll have a gaucho to reupholster pretty soon, and the wall-pads that keep you from brushing up against the cold walls in bed.

I ordered some Crypton fabric to test, and covered a small bench with it, with piping around the edge. The hope was that it might prove "cat proof", and the results are very good. It's proving very durable. It is designed for outdoor furniture, so it is water resistant, but the fabric is a touch abrasive. Still, i'm going to recover my dinette cushions with it in the spring.
Crypton is $30-40 a yard, but here is where you can buy large remnants for $10-12/yd

Fantastic!

I had just spoken to the wife yesterday about material for the covers on the dinette & goucho and wall pads for the "Landshark". I will be taking a look at this source to see if we can use this fabric. I will be watching this thread for further posts. Thanks, Ed

I used Crypton fabric last time around with awesome results.

Crypton is a treatment that is applied to fabric to make it suitable for hard use and heavy cleaning. Crypton is the brand name of the treatment and while crypton fabric can be stain and may not shed wet stuff the way you expect, it can be cleaned with heavy cleaners, steam and abrasion with out damaging the fabric. It's used in healthcare settings, commercial applications and other high use areas. Highly recommended!

Just had our cushions recovered with a CF Stinson cryton fabric. I believe these folks make the Crypton fabric mentioned in this thread (as well as Sunbrella). Their website is most informative as it provided fabric content and fabric data such as (but not limited to) on moisture barrier properties, fabric resistance, colorfastness, abrasion strength, tear strength, seam slippage and more.

You will pay for these great fabric qualities. I ended up paying $60/yard after an extensive search. The price drove me to investigate using two different types of fabric on the dinette: one for the cushions and another on the bench. If you look at some used Airstream pictures (for sale), they has done this on some of their trailers.

After handling the fabric it is thinner than the Airstream installed fabric and I like its texture better.

The fabric could be used as curtains but they will probably need to a cover across the back (because of the pattern on the back may be pretty ugly). This fabric would block more light than the white/off-white ones that come stock on the trailer.

Good luck.

A long time ago, we had the VW beetle seats redone by a woman at the county airport. She used aircraft-grade material, and it held up very well. Presumably somewhat more fireproof, though I can't really vouch for that.
