Carpet headliner

Does anyone have an AS with carpet on the ceiling that fell down? What did you do in replacing?
We have a 1994 Excella and need to make some changes.
Thanks in advance for any info

Our 22’ Sport does not have “carpet” headliner…but it’s walls and ceiling are covered in what is often termed “mouse-fur”. It is likely glued in-place. It prevents condensation and waking up at night because you rolled-over and your bare arm touches a cold, aluminum wall.

We like it, especially after having visited later 22’ Sports which had bare aluminum walls/ceiling…. The mouse-fur is also a very nice sound-proofing.

I once came across a thread here in the AirForums where someone was hoping to replace theirs and seeking info….and they later posted that they’d located the product at a marine-upholstery shop in Tomball, TX…where it is used as a “hull liner” below-decks in boats such as cabin-cruisers, cuddy-cabins, and many sailboats.

The "mouse fur" was called Ozite. A good substitute is: https://www.sailrite.com/HullBlanket...e-Ivory-M93-72. As far as I can tell from what I have purchased, the product from Sailrite is Ozite. Ozite or the Sailrite product is glued in place with contact cement.

Your 1994 Excella came from the factory with a white vinyl headliner, not carpet. It was foam backed and glued to the ceiling. The glue always failed over time, causing it to droop and fall away from the ceiling leading people to do all kinds of interesting things to correct the problem.

If the carpet you have is in good shape and you just want to stick it back, I'd recommend a good contact cement intended for mounting carpets to floors. There are many varieties, and for this I'd want one with an instant adhesion. You put it on both surfaces, wait till it gets tacky, and then stick on the carpet. You only get one shot though so you have to be accurate the first time - there are no do overs with instant contact cement.

Best bet would be to go to a flooring shop and ask for a recommendation.

Lynne1203,

As someone that just replaced the vinyl headliner in a 1996 34' Front Kitchen model with the Sailrite Foam Backed Vinyl Headliner material, I can tell you that it is not a job for the faint of heart. Between the prep work, rough cutting of material, using spray glue (3M-90), working over your head, trying to hold in place until the bond is created between the trailer and the foam backed vinyl, fine tune cutting for a better-looking job, etc.. You will need six-hands, patience, the right tools, large area to work and the fortitude to see the project through. That along with trying to work around things that cannot be easily removed, makes it a "Fun" project. Also, in the daylight, it will look great and you will be so proud of yourself it's funny. When the sun goes down and the lights come on, you see every single imperfection in your work and it will drive you nuts!!

Granted, happy that I did it because I wanted to keep the trailer as original as possible and I might even do it again. But would think long and hard about using a white textured paint in the future instead of the vinyl.

Enjoy,
