A short cut

Found some oxy gel and added peroxide to the point it was still viscous enough to not run. It works. Don't know if it works as good as the original formula, but it works.

It's called Oxi Clean Max Force Pre Treater Gel Stick. Picked up at WalMart.

The gel applied by itself did not seem to do much. The added hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient. Let the mixture sit for a few hours then wash it off. Put on several applications.

Fiberglass, is naturally yellow.

No chemical will change it's color.

You can replace it with a plastic cover, or paint it.

I have used the retro brite recipe on my bathroom sink cabinet . Got the hydrogen peroxide at Sally's beauty supply . It worked well. The tambouri doors turned out well with one application the sink will need more apps. May paint it anyway. Am going to. do another application today. Would also like to try it on the endcaps. Would not remove them.Hope it lightens them up some.

I used Retr0bright on both and the front end cap. I found that the gel lightened the rear endcap considerably more than the front endcap after one application. I plan to Retr0right the front endcap again when I can get hold of some more peroxide (it’s really hard to get hold of in the UK due to licensing stuff).
The mistake I made is I don’t think I had the mixture thick enough, as overnight the mixture slowly slipped down the walls stripping all the newly applied paint!
I used a UV strip light as the light source.
Has anyone painted their front endcap, and if so do they have some photos?

Did I miss something about using UV?

http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/Using+Retr0Bright

"Just before you paint the gel onto the parts, add ¼ teaspoonful of any “Oxy” type laundry booster and stir it in thoroughly, and then put the parts under a UV lamp or out in the sun."

I used a black light to ensure good results; the Retr0bright glowed when exposed to the black light.

I just wanted to update the thread with my experience today. I made a batch of the goop and used it on the plastic trim from around our skylights. It worked great. I used corn starch for the thickening agent and that worked well also. Now my ceiling is all nice, clean, and white! This provided a better result in my estimation than painting as I was able to retain the "texture" molded into the plastic.

A great way to restore yellowed plastic

I used thick bleach from a beauty supply store and a UV light to lighten the plastic in our 73 Overlander and it worked great and was very light in color, but during the summer it started turning yellow again. I am sure this was because of the UV ray exposure, even though the drapes were closed - the sun is really bright in El Paso, Texas. Is there a UV blocking spray that would prevent this? If we have sun screen for people that blocks UV rays, why not one to spray on plastic. I suppose I could tape aluminum foil across the windows when it is not in use, or bleach the end caps each year, but there has to be a better solution.

303 should work. That is what several manufactures of items (Fantastic Fan for one) recommend. It does have UV inhibitors in it.

Does anyone know if this will work on the ceiling light shades/vent fan covers in my '73 Excella? Or if there are replacements available? Thanks.

jimbob79, I do window treatments for a living. There are two solutions which I can mention off the top of my head:

1) there is a film which will block the sun to prevent that from happening.

2) I have quite a few clients who request black-out lining for their window treatments which will effectively block the sun from coming in. There is also "dim out" lining, which does not make the interior so dark, but just dims it.

3) well, there is a third, but I hesitate to mention it. For my high-end clients, I do the French blackout method of lining, which totally blocks the sun -- this is especially used when using silk so the sun does not rot it, but also for those in a very sunny location who do not want the pattern on their window treatments fading from the sun shining through.

I don't know if the treatment will work or not...worth a try. But Inland R.V does have replacements. I've probably had mine 7 or 8 years, and they still look fine.

There is a product sold at Lowes and Home depot and I cannot recall the name but it's easy to find. It comes in two kinds one for ABS and one for porcelian. You'll want the ABS stuff. You can get it in White and go to your local paint store and have it tinted any color you need. Goes on with a really GOOD brush with no streaks and made my 1972 International bat look just like it did in 1972. Brush in one direction only for the very best results. No muss and no fuss. No smell and drys overnight to a hard surface. Resist scratches and dings. Bob
