1987 Sovereign

Hi Everyone, we just bought a 29' 1987 Sovereign. We are very excited to be joining everyone on the road. While she is almost 30 years old, she is in great shape. However, we would like to update her walls a bit.

We are flip flopping between painting the existing wall covering vs stripping it off to hopefully expose the aluminum underneath.

So a few questions from y'all...

1) what is the stuff that is on the walls?

2) Can it be painted- or will it just fall down after?

3) Has anyone stripped it/ can it be stripped?

4) What is underneath?

We live in Ontario Canada, so the weather fluctuates...

Any help or suggestions/directions are greatly appreciated!!!

I'm not sure what your wall covering is but if it is a "hard" vinyl like our '76 is the covering on the curved walls is original from Alcoa and adhered very well. The flat bulkheads were covered by Airstream over plywood and the adhesive was not very long lasting in the mid 70s trailers so easy to remove. There have been several threads on how to remove inner wall coverings on the forum. Try Googling airforums innerwall stripping.

Hi we have the same year/model as you. It is a vinyl wallpaper. You may notice it is sticky to the touch. The word is in the forum that the adhesive used to adhere it to the wall comes through the vinyl giving it the sticky feel. In the short term a scrubbing with a spray on household cleaner will take the sticky away. It can be stripped leaving aluminum behind. http://www.airforums.com/forums/f39/...70s-69281.html.

Thanks! We peeled some off in strategic places and are very happy with the results.
