We did Yellowstone/Tetons at the end of October a few years ago, actually over Halloween. We camped east of Moran Junction at a Forest Service campground. We intended on boondocking, and found some good sites. However, we stopped at the FS Ranger Station and talked to them. They told us we could stay at the campground free of charge as long as we hauled out our own trash. The campground was officially closed and the restrooms were locked and the water turned off. We were the only ones there. Being in a FS campground wasn't exactly the boondocking trip we planned, but close enough. It was our first trip with the Airstream and we didn't know what to expect from the furnace. It got really cold at night (around zero degrees F) and we ran the battery down running the furnace. It snowed on us too. The next couple of nights we cuddled up with more blankets and sleeping bags.

Normally we avoid Yellowstone like the plague. There are just too many people there. However, that weekend was the last few days they were going to be open for the year. Everything in the parks were already closed, no concessions, no campgrounds, pretty much everything was locked up. Because of that, there were no people. We may have seen a dozen other vehicles. It was beautiful. There was a lot of wildlife moving about. There was frost and snow on everything. It was the best Yellowstone trip I've ever had. We are thinking about doing it again this fall. It's the only time you'll find us in Yellowstone.

If you go out there in the fall, I'd suggest checking hunting regulations. Check with Wyoming Game and Fish. I'm not sure, but I think some areas are closed to camping during some parts of the hunting season. If hunting season is active, wear orange when on trails just to reduce likelihood of being mistaken for a deer. Also be prepared for bears. At that time of year they're preparing to go into hibernation and can be grouchy. I think bear spray is required, but even if it isn't, it's a good idea.

Wind River Range

Just realized...we drove the Wind River Range in summer 2019. The scenery is beautiful; but there are tunnels and switchbacks! Our first thought was "glad we didn't bring the AS!"

Check your highways carefully before towing through these areas!

We got snowed out of Y’stone mid sept. In ‘18. Passes closed due to snow. Just so ya know it’s near the end of the season.

Right now the road between Fishing Bridge and Canyon is closed. Fuel truck spilled thousands of gallons of gasoline in a wreck. They are removing the affected soil before the gas makes it into the adjacent Yellowstone River. Giant hole as you mat guess.

Best guess is another week...

There is boondocking space around Yellowstone.
But I don’t know if you’ll be able to access it post snow.
Go East beyond Cooke City/Silvergate (NE entrance) and East past the three Nat. Forest campgrounds, then keep your eyes peeled for likely looking pullouts.

Two years ago in early September we camped two nights on the Clark’s Fork in this vicinity, until a spot opened in Pebble Creek campground in the park. The spot on the Clark’s fork was as good or better than any campsite in the park.

Btw Yellowstone in September is as crowded as any summer months.
And if memory serves me the only road that’s plowed in the winter is the road from the NE entrance to the N entrance or you could describe it as Cooke City to Gardiner.

We know it will be almost impossible to find any RV campsite reservations, and we want to boondock (the Airstream is actually gutted we are making a trip out of picking it up and bringing it home to CO) - we are basically going to use it as a big tent for this trip

Hoping to find a great place to boondock with our RV close enough to Yellowstone to head into the park each day (or guidance on taking it into the park to camp that time of year)

Also, looking for a great boondocking place around the wind river range in WY - on the Pinedale side/area

Thanks!

We were there yesterday. Stayed in Cody Friday night got up early and entered the park just about sunrise. Beautiful! My wife had never been there before and she absolutely fell in love. Saw many of the sights (no Canyon area) but by noon it was so busy we could get out of there quick enough. I said to her that snow would be better than the crowds for sure. Hopefully Yosemite in a few weeks will not be as busy.
October sounds perfect!

This NFS campground is 20 miles north of Mammoth in YNP and open all year 'round. No water available. Just a vault toilet. It's *almost* boondocking

I've stayed there a few times and it's nice.

Trip was great!!

The trip was great and the weather was gorgeous!!

We ended up Going to the Eagle Creek campground just outside of Gardiner on Jardine road and it was perfect. There is a hot springs not far from there (Yellowstone hot springs) and it’s close to the north entrance to the park. It’s first come first serve but we were able to get a spot but definitely don’t get there too late it filled up by 3pm

We also stayed a night at the Gros ventre campground (also first come First serve) for a day in grand teton and it’s beautiful and well Maintained

We stayed in Victor Idaho at the teton valley RV resort for 2 nights and it’s really nice (we did a full day river fly fishing with World Cast Anglers in Victor)

Lastly we stayed and boondocked along the green river near Cora/Pinedale - the road is ROUGH but it’s beautiful there!!

Thanks everyone for all your recommendations!

Emmaggy, That sounds like a fantastic trip for sure! Glad you had a good time. Nice when plans work out for the best. We skipped the coast and Yosemite after Washington State because of the fires but had a great time anyway. Vegas was a great detour. Not what we had planned but still great.
