Question What do you all do for entertainment?

Sometime in the next five years I plan to cut back on my work & spend more time pulling my AS around the USA . I was wondering what you all do with your time while boondocking ?

Well, there's kayaking, hiking, birding, and of course kayak fishing...

Reading, fishing (poorly), hiking, hot springs, photography. I have been out on the road since mid May, mostly boondocking, and haven't gotten bored yet.

Hubby tinkers, sleeps, eats, drinks beer and reads (books and airforums). Me? I don't tinker, and my drinks are much milder...LOL!

It depends on where we are and what's available around us. Lots of times we just go out for drives, fish, or just hang out. Never a dull moment...

So much to see and do!

We haven't been actually boondocking yet tho we have camped in state parks, without full hookups, but we have so many interests that we are never bored. We fish, hike, take pictures, rockhound, make jewelry, generally explore, do a lot of reading, I paint, do beading if time permits, and sometimes we play cards or other games when it is raining or at night. We also watch movies on the laptop if we have down time. There is always a new woods, a new trail, a different sunset or a rock to find. And plenty of trout!

Every trip is it's own cribbage tourney - 1 game/day, lots of walks/short hikes, take lots of pictures (keep praying for that 1 National Geographic picture which never materializes - damn camera!), every year I pick one classic novel to read - this year it's Moby Dick, we always take in the local attractions - whatever they (or it) may be, always explore back roads/trails with the GPS, take in pretty much every sunset and a few sunrises, practice making martinis, check out the neighbours and - of course - light the occasional campfire.

You'll never guess my passtime while camping.

I fiddle around with my mandolin ( as opposed to mandolining around with a fiddle ) Boondocking can be a great for learning how to play a musical instrument.

When boondocking we are usually there because of something the area offers. It's usually fishing for Sam and for me it's mountain biking. We end up using the Safari to eat and sleep in. We'll watch a DVD if we can stay awake long enough.

While we don't boondock, we do camp quite a bit. I like to spend time cooking, eating, and planning the next meal.

Old thread, but yeah - sometimes nothing but relaxing.
Other times kayaking whether on a lake, stream/river or kayak surfing (butt surfing) in the ocean. Bicycling, fishing, hiking, Espresso, 4X4 driving, swimming, etc, etc...

All of the above plus...

I think we do a little of about everything mentioned above.

I will add one that I enjoy. The night skies. Especially if you are far enough away from the light pollution that is becoming so prevalent. Like most hobbies, it can get expensive, but it does not have to be that way. At the same time, the worst thing you can do is buy a cheap telescope to start with. You will be so disappointed and frustrated that you give up right away.

The same binoculars you use for bird watching will serve as a start. Get out your camp lounge so you can lay back and pan the skies. Next you need a flash light with a red bulb or covered with red cellophane to preserve your night vision. Last, before a trip I always print out the monthly night sky guide that you can find at:

Skymaps.com - Publication Quality Sky Maps & Star Charts

Find an astronomy club and go to one of their star parties if you get the bug. Lots of good help there.

Astronomy Clubs world wide

Clear skies...

We would never have time to be bored, the old addadge "so many things, so little time!", but I've not seen anyone mention "geocaching" yet. Very entertaining, time consuming and fun.

It doesn't take boondocking to do that.

We're so busy when at home, travel and camping means more relaxed time to talk, appreciate each other, and have adult time.
