To Compost or Not To Compost?...That is the question.

I'm thinking of installing a composting toilet in a 2003 M25 Safari. Done correctly and managed properly I am hoping to eliminate a messy task an become a bit more green.

Along with this change I am considering cleaning out the black tank and re-plumbing it to expand grey water capacity.

And then, there's the issue of solar... but first things first.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Warnings?

i am considering the same but also thinking of modifying the liquid waste drainage of the composting toilet to drain into the black
tank so we don’t have to drain the liquid
part so often.

If you are traveling and putting it in the landfill it is 100% worse for the environment. A traditional black water system will ultimately be recycled and used for agriculture. In a landfill it is removed from the ecosystem and encased for all time along with your substrate.

If you want a toilet upgrade add a toto c100 and live happily ever after.

If the job is messy I highly highly recommend getting a stiff sewer hose like a rhino. There is no need for messy.

A traditional black water system is better for the environment and easier for you.

The modern wastewater-treatment plant employs basic physics and high technology to purify the dirtiest of water so it can go back into the environment as a member in good standing of the water cycle.

Peter is at least partly right. However not all wastewater treatment plant sludge meets a happy end, I am a sanitary engineer, I know. And I would think that you could usually find ecologically suitable places for the solids, but it might be a bit of work and not always possible. I do like the idea of composting, but not sure I would ever actually do it myself. Hard to imagine it would truly be smell free.

I also like the toto idea, spray is cleaner and probably better for the environment than TP. I have hand held bidet sprayers in my home. Anyone ever do this in an AS?

Let us know where you end up!

FYI there are a variety of threads/posts on "composting toilets" here on AirForums:

https://www.google.com/search?q=comp...=airforums.com

These fairly recent threads, with roughly 100 posts, have some good info IMO:

Good luck.

Wondering if you [the OP of this thread] are catching all this? Your 3/14/21 post above appears to be your only post on this site.

Happy trails.
