SJNF Dispersed Camping Fees in 2016

A partial list of dispersed camping areas in the San Juan National Forest that will start requiring fees in 2016 was published today. Additional sites may be added to the list later. On the List: Little Molas, Lower Hermosa and South Mineral. In addition to charging fees for dispersed camping, a number toilets will be removed from trail heads and interpretive sites. Reasons given for these changes include a 50% budget cut over the past 10 years. The visitor information program will be cut 30%.

It's been my observation that the demand for dispersed camping has increased due to RV'ers not wanting to pay campsite fees rather than seeking solitude. Too, one dispersed campsite was closed due to rowdy kids.

I suspect that other forest districts will make similar moves as budgets tighten.

That's really sad, but not unexpected. The Forest Service has been thinning the dispersed camping areas for several years now. It won't be long until the only boondocking place will be Wal-Mart, and they will probably cut that out too.

Is it true that all campsites at Florida parks are now full hookup? I was down on the Keys last week and I hears that Pennekamp Park is all booked for the season. The Governor is cutting back drastically on personnel yet wants our parks to support themselves. This is actually unheard of in the US. Visitors may soon be kept out for private cattle herds and hunting seasons.

I don't like to deal in absolutes but all of the Florida State Park campgrounds that we have looked at have both water and electricity. However, not all have sewer hookups.

Very few Florida State Parks have full hook-ups. I can only think of two, Rainbow Springs and Pennekamp...probably a handful of others.

Cutting park budgets in a state that makes its living from visitors is asinine.

Starting to sound like the squeeze put on the USPS for an eventual privatization? Federal and state parks are already facing increasing pressure to privatize concessions and park stores. Energy companies are pushing for leases.

Campgrounds in the NFS have been run by concessionaires for the past 20 years. Nothing new here. Compared to private campgrounds, NFS campgrounds have lots of space, cheap prices and tremendous locations. Still a bargain at twice the price!

I am not an authority on Florida State campgrounds but two lovely campgrounds (both are 10's in my opinion) that I have enjoyed in Florida are Henderson Beach Campground near Destin, FL (water and electric only) and Top Sail Park in Santa Rosa Beach (water, electric, and sewer) both are beautiful parks. The only issue is that you have to make reservations early. They fill up quickly because they are beautiful parks in great locations. Hope that this helps.
